New Rifle,7.5×54mm French MAS-49. PICS. Anyone have any info?

I bought this a few weeks back, just added it to my pistol DROS. I'm still not sure why I bought it, totally not my style.

I'm looking for some input from people who own these.
What can I expect from the 7.5x54?
Whats the max effective range on this bad boy?
Is it accurate at all? Kick like a mule?

    History?
    Value?

Ammo was $13 a box of 20. Not too bad at all.

    Thanks in advance.

    I have a 49/56 - it's the new and improved uglier version of the 49 - and I think it's a fine rifle too.

The 7.5X54 is pretty close to the 7.62X51 in performance. Shooting out to 300 yards I don't think you'd see much difference. The gun is reliable as heck, 10 round mags should run you about $15.00 each. Not much kick, you can buy a French issue black recoil pad for easier shooting and increased LOP. There should be a rail in the left side of the receiver, KVAR makes a very good slide on scope mount for about $80.00.

Really can't help on value. I see them going anywhere from $600.00 to $1,100.00 - guessing the $1,100.00 ones don't move too fast.

If you want to reload, Grafs sells brass and the gun uses plain old .308 diameter bullets.

Thanks for the info. Like I said, no idea why I chose it. I guess because I just wanted to shoot it. But from the prices you listed, I paid less then half the $600 with tax and DROS. So I assume it was worth the buy.

I missed one at around $200 in 2005 Don't 49/56's have to have the grenade launcher removed somehow?

Are you thinking of the Yugo 59/66 (SKS)

I've been thinking about getting one of those or a SVT-40.

No, the MAS 44 and 49 IIRC do not have a GL. The 49/56 does as does the Yugo 59/66. Some versions of the bolt action MAS 36 have a GL as well, I was never clear if those had to have the GL removed or not.

            SVT-40 can get pricey.

I rarely to never see milsurp 7.5French ammo anymore and it always tended to be expensive and poor quality anyways at least in the Syrian loadings.

Except the link shows the conversion has been "Discontinued".

Century conversions to .308 resulted in mixed feedback, most of it crappy (what you'd expect from the angry beavers at Century).

                    I'd recommend you start reloading

Doesn't that look spefy(or however you spell that word)! I suppose if you had a well beaten up 49/56 that you did not care about, that would be the way to go.
