    Mini-14 Issues

I took my Mini-14 out of the box today and shot it for the first time. About 50 rounds in everything went dark, and by dark I mean the rear sight came loose and rotated 90 degrees. At first I was horrified, because initially I thought the set screws that hold the rear sight came loose and were ejected into the dirt. Fortunately, on further inspection at home I was relived that the screws were intact albeit very loose.

So .. two questions, have any new Mini-14 owners experience the rear sight coming loose from the factory, and second did you get a sling in the box. My Mini-14 came with rifle, two rings, rail, two mags, and a lock, but NO sling.

This is normal and one of the most common complaints. Either upgrade to some tech sights/Williams WGRS or use some blue loctite (I'd use it on the new sights too).

The mini14 is very over gassed and has a reputation for beating up sights, brass, and scopes (even with the newer ejection pattern). Smaller diameter gas bushings and adjustable gas blocks are available to help tune your gas pressure.

It does not come with a sling but I highly recommend Spectergear 2-point mini14 specific with stock magazine pouch.

Bought my 186 series used but yes, lost a rear sight not too long ago. Called and ruger sent out a replacement free within a week. Blue loctite on the replacement and no more issues.

Good call, I see it much cheaper on optics planet, for the OD green.

Winchester makes 1-1/4" QD sling swivels for a coupla bucks/ea.

Remove the front swivel and drill out the gas block mount for the front QD swivel hard-point. The stock screw stud works for the back.

Then you can use a USGI web sling.

                Rigging the USGI Web Sling

NTS: the RUGER goody-bag w/ the sight and rail parts? comes w/ a little tube of blue loctite.

Sight the rifle in for 25/200 yards and then loctite it down.

Loose sight is pretty common. Happened to mine but a little blue Loctite fixed that. I have the Model 5820 and comes with a sling but no rings.

Lock tite it down. Tech sights are too tall and dont make a good substitute.

Are you sure you got the right one?

There's different models for different mini dates/configs

I've been lookin' hard at the Tech-sight. (really like their RR200 for the old, dog-eared "181" mini-14's)

But the "ghost ring" sight on the new "582" is a big improvement optically over the old "181" even though the adjustment is for ****.

But the Mini-14 is a carbine rifle, and the 5.56/.223 is only good for ~ 200 yards or so anyway, so a fixed 25/200 yard PBR/BZ is fine... no adjustment required (and a little Kentucky windage now and then).

The M1 Garand sights, however, are the best aperture sights ever mounted on a rifle, and easily insure hits out to 500 yards (if you do your part).

I actually bought a bottle of purple loctite to use on all my scope mounting.
