I like the title of this thread, stating 300 yards is "long range" for an AR15.
If it's a defensive AR, 200 yards is long range IMO. If it's a "pressure's-off," varmint/competition rig, 300 yards is just getting started.
I think anybody wanting to do the best "long range" work with a .223/5.56 AR platform should look into a 18" barrel. I may take some flack for it but that's about as good as it'll get for a .223/5.56 platform. YES, there are those exhibitionists who like to take a 75+ grain .223 and lob it out to 1,000 yards and beyond, but for the rest of us sitting in the 99% of AR shooters, that's just unrealistic.
Bottom line, if it's a .223/5.56 platform I think the 18" will suit you well for the most practical "long range" shooting you'll ever do with it.VMI '11

The Stag 6H upper has a ER Shaw barrel, not the best, but not bad at all.
You shouldn't have much trouble with it at 600 yards using heavier rounds (69-77 grainers).
You'll need fitting optics though, if you can't see it CLEARLY, you can't hit it precisely.Comment

Man sized target at 300m with a standard M-16, if you can't do that qual you need practice/eyesight correctionsigpicComment

28 out of 30 rounds on target @ 300 yards with a rifle that has not been zeroed is good shooting. Sounds like a real timesaver when it comes to setting your optics up.
I'd be more impressed if you shot those 30 rounds prone, out of a 30 round mag though.
Oh, and to the OP, my Daniel Defense M4V7 does 6 inch groups at 300 yards. I'm pretty happy with it.Last edited by SoCal326; 08-25-2014, 6:50 PM.Comment

We are in FL so it was a 30rd mag. It was sort of zeroed, just not dialed in all the way for my tastes. Darren had it on target closer in so I just held over a tad bit and the rounds went "GOONG".28 out of 30 rounds on target @ 300 yards with a rifle that has not been zeroed is good shooting. For a precision AR you need a stainless heavy or bull barrel.
Look into the Rock River Arms Varmint upper or complete rifle.
It will put them into the same hole at 100 yards, probably one of the best option for long range precision with an with a AR on a reasonable budget.Comment

If the OP wants to shoot small groups any AR will not do, even at 100 yards. Generally your stock"mil spec" AR will shoot 2-3 MOA at best sometimes/usually worse.
You need a free floated match grade stainless heavy barrel, for optimum accuracy with the AR platform. A good trigger and of course a good optic is also a must. Don't forget match grade ammo.Comment
