Just periodically check your roller gap and clean your chamber they are considered about as reliable as an AK.
I agree. I was ready to get the heavy recoil buffer, but after shooting the rifle I felt no need. It is not uncomfortable to shoot at all IMO.

I have a Springfield SAR-8. The Greek made import from the 90's The HK-91 format can be very accurate with its fully floating barrel. Mine shoots sub inch 100 yard groups no problem with match ammo. In the past I was able to do it with open sights due to the excellent design of the sights these guns have. The main issues with the design is the trigger, mounting a scope, and the overall weight. The trigger can be improved, but it will never be great compared to some other 308 options out there. I did a little work on mine and was able to improve it to some degree. I believe there are trigger job options on the market, but I have no experience with them. In my opinion the trigger is the main issue that separates the HK-91 design from the other 308 options. The second issue is mounting a scope. The HK-91 requires a claw type mount which does work, but is generally expensive, and adds additional weight to a gun that does not need to be any heavier. The PTR may have a rail option, which they all should have, mine does not. I think the HK is probably the heaviest, or a least at the top of the list of the 308 battle rifles. Its a beast, but most 308 battle rifle designs are heavy. If you can live with the trigger design, scope mounting, and the weight, the hk-91 is a very reliable proven format.

I have a DSA STG and an M1A Scout, have had an AR 10 type also. I just bought the PTR GI. Which is best? Beats me, I like them all.

The PTR has been fun fiddling with to get the way I want it. HK furniture is not hard to find, I found a wide forend and like new OD green HK stoc to replace the slim forend and less than looking new stock the rifle came with. Numrich has excellent condition HK factory claw mounts for about $100.00 and "HKParts" and "Robertrg" carry all kinds of parts too. My only gripe regarding the rifle now is the poly trigger housing. It's not a great match for the rest of the rifle, finding a steel, parked that's "clipped & pinned" is a bit of a challenge.

I want to mount a 1 to 6X, straight tubed scope on mine - again a bit of a challenge. Lots of 1 to 4X. I think the rifle should carry a smallish scope, nothing too big.

I'm considering this option as well. It might not be ideal for a SHTF situation but that's an unlikely scenario anyways. I did look into an R700 but the consensus was you need to spend a couple hundred more to get a better trigger and accuracy out of it. So price quickly approaches or exceeds $1k and even then I don't think it made it a 1 moa gun. The 2-3 moa or even 3-4 moa of the PTR or FAL should suffice for me.

Thanks for everyone's opinions and info. I might go for the PTR 91 A35 so that I can mount optics easier. I'll have to find someone at the range who will let me fire their PTR so I can see if the trigger is really that bad. I might look into a FAL if the PTR doesn't work out. My friend has a Century Arms FAL which is a mismash of metric and inch parts and it's not that great or reliable of a gun.

An AR in 308 is another consideration as it does share some things with my standard 5.56 ARs. I wasn't aware the price had come down on them either. Last I saw they were $1500 or more and had some issues. If they offer superior accuracy then I might have to look into it further. Standard ARs seem to be 2-4 moa so if the 308 is in that range then I might just stick with the PTR.

There's a lot of info to digest in this thread but at least I know what I should be looking at and see how it fits me. Thanks again and I welcome any further comments. This really is a great community with lots of valuable knowledge to obtain.

Fal, g3, m1a, scar, all awesome! Recoil is over blown on the g3 in my opinion. Barrel change? Much harder on a g3 type, but 10-15k rounds of 7.62 I gonna run you $5-8k, so I wouldn't rule it out over that. Plus remember 2 is 1 1 is none, so buy two, or one of each. M1a are awesome, Handel all of them and then decide.

PTR91 been veddy, veddy, good to me.

Having owned a REAL HK91 20+ years ago, the heavier barrel is more pleasant to shoot, vis-a-vis muzzle rise. Lotta people be-otch about the trigger ergonomics, over against the M1A, but I'm the exact OPPOSITE. I've NEVER liked the M1/M14 stock, and have NO trouble with the HK fire controls! Williams Trigger Specialties took out the rough edges very quickly and affordably, so it can be done.

IF you like a compact (relative term, I know...).308, the HK/PTR will git 'r' done, as will the DSA STG-58 Para. AWESOME rifle, as I got to fondle one extensively at a carbine course in 2009; I also used to own a full size L1A1 back in the day. DSA builds the BEST FAL carbine, hands-down - you can't go wrong with one of those. Their customer service though, BLOWS.

THANKFULLY, you'll never need it for the rifle itself - just order your mags, parts, and 'accoutrement' from someone else... if you want to receive it THIS decade...

I'd go for the A3R with the improvements that it has over the regular models. I've always wanted one, but never taken the plunge.

I owned an HK91, three FALs, four M1As over the years and feel the M1A is the most accurate, most ergonomic of the three. The high sights and pistol grip on the 91 and FAL lends them to canting of the rifle which throws shots left or right depending on which way the rifle is tipped. The stock design of the M1A and the lower sight line cuts down on this tendency.

A day after the range with my new ptrGI I have to say I am in love!!!!! I have had a couple big bullet rifles including the PSL. My PTR is by far MY favorite. Not one single malfunction. She ran like a sewing machine. Recoil was not as bad as I was expecting and it made the neatest sounds while in motion!!! Do not let a great thing go by PICK ONE UP!!!!! I am so impressed with fit and finish, even with used plastics. If I were to buy again I would get the model with the welded on rail. Ops I just ordered one... DAMN...

Saiga 308 will weigh the least. Just throwing that in. Bolt action will weigh less than anything.

They're all full of awesome though.

Get it, you won't be sorry. Ive only put 40 rounds of steel case thru mine (PTR91F) and was already able to get about 1.5"-2.0" groups. Trigger job in the near future should get sub 1". Love it, oh and the mags are super cheap. I had some left over from a hk clone I had a while back.

There are lots of Hk G3 accessories available to pimp your ride, if you have the $$$.
My registered Hk91 has the carry handle, ejection port buffer, folding and fixed buttstocks, claw scope mount, slimline folding bipod, and PSG1 trigger group.
If I had the money, I would get the PSG1 buttstock and pistol grip. They cost some serious coin these days.
Recently replaced the OEM flashhider with a US made Vortex, so I can no longer install an evil deadly assault bayonet.
