Is it essential to have multiple extra parts for your ar 15?!

I was thinking about it. Should I start buying extra parts for my ar. bolts, extractors, plungers, springs, barrel nuts, etc..

Im assuming its a good idea but is it a necessity. I was searching but couldn't find a thread on this topic! If you could just give examples of parts you guys purchased would be cool. also whats the most important part for any ar owner to have.

Also I understand that these parts hold up for thousands of rounds. But i thought it would be a good idea to have extra parts

Two is one, one is none.

      Not essential, but probably wise

Extra bolt... Yes. Beyond that turns into additional rifles. I believe I am finally done with the ar platform... At least in 5.56/223.

Was out shooting 2 weeks ago with a friend. (A one hour drive from home).
On his first shot, his extractor broke. He didn't have an extra...
            I did.
We continued shooting for another 3 hours.
Yes, I have spare parts. Springs, pins, rings, extra bolt.

But for the love of your wallet, never ever buy spare lowers.

They will compel you through magical forces not yet comprehended to complete them. There is no known cure.

                  OP

                  How mechanically inclined are you??

One of my shooting buddies could not change a simple spring in one of his rifles.

He is a brilliant chemical engineer but a theory guy, not a tools guy.

Parts will eventually fail. If you are not versed in replacing an extractor or trigger spring, then parts can be good if your shooting buddies can change parts.

On the AR platform, mags are the weak link followed by the bolt and charging handle.

We all have seen bent charging handles from bad technique, cheap airsoft materials or leaving the handle back with the bolt open in a rack.

So for $200-$250 you can carry a spare bolt and charging handle.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                  (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Just as essential as buying multiple rolls of TP.
The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria)"

There are several sources of repair kits, Midway, Brownells, PSA etc. I have an extra BCG and spare parts kit. They are cheap insurance.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

I keep an extra lpk, bcg, and charging handle in my range bag. Haven't needed them yet, but good to have.

Exactly why I wanted to get extra parts

This Is EXACTLY why I wanted to get some extra parts!! Also I believe its pretty simple to break down an AR personally. So replacing parts wouldn't be a problem.

Is it you one and only "prepper" gun? If so, then yes, lots and lots of spare parts.

Is it a go out and do some target shooting or plinking recreational gun? If so, then not really required.

What kind of spare parts do you have for your car? Bike? Oven? Furnace? Air Conditioner? Computer? Smart Phone?
