Right but it was funny because your tongue and cheek comment expected that 100 yards was long for iron sights. Which is in it self funny because a lot of guys in here find irons acceptable for 600 yard competition.

If you had said "said no one shooting an unknown distance match ever..." then it would have been both right and funny. Instead it was funny and sort of sad.

Over my years of shooting, I found people who can shoot irons well, can shoot well with any sight. But, not the other way around.

My favorite, to teach someone new to shootings, is a bolt action or single shot 22lr, with iron sights. Once they learn the basics of shooting, they tend to do well with any sight.

I like Iron's for general shooting, but as some have mentioned, ageing eyes affect how much I like irons.

Ignoring all the sarcasm and snide remarks...

There are benefits to a good optic that are hard to argue with.

Magnification lets you confirm your target before you just start punching holes into a human "shape" off in the distance. Depending on the distances involved it also allows you to pick and choose where you hit the target rather than just aiming for a general area.

Red dots make shooting from your support side MUCH easier. They also speed things up considerably. And they help during low light shooting.

Night vision and thermal are a major game changer in the pitch dark.

All that said, you should practice with your irons as often as you do your optics. I've successfully run a carbine course with irons, because my very high-end red dot failed. There were lots of areas where a red dot would have speed things up and made life easier, but performance wise I was about in the middle of the class. If only because I do practice with them. When I learned to use this platform in the military red dots were not an issued item. So you had no choice but to learn how to use your irons because that is all there was. Today's shooters are pretty spoiled.
