is thier a gunsmith in so cal who can build an m1a with real usgi parts?, like on a good reciever not a springfield>>? i know some springfields are great and all but i want a chrome lined barrel usgi parts , just a plain ol m1a? is thier anyone who can do this in so cal, or i will just roll the money over on a m700

The Springfield armory is a great cast reciever, with a lifetime warranty. I own two and have never had any type of failure. Period.

But if you must:

In Southern California you can contact Enterprise Arms. They offer an alternative CNC reciever and shop services.

Jim Gronning of Gruning Precisision in Riverside used to build M14 type rifles. I am not sure if he is stll in business. Check google. This is the last contact number I had for his shop 909 689 6692. He can build you a rifle on reciever and parts you supply, probably will cost as much as Fulton, SEI, LRB, or TEXAS M1A's.

Tim La France in San Diego. Ditto, don't know if he is still in business. Last contact: 619-293-3373.

If you must have a "non SP" reciever with GI parts, my advice would be to look for a second hand Fulton Armory rack grade.

A good value:

SP armory rifles made around 1998-2001 have GI Chrome lined barrels and some GI parts. Look for a second hand one, they are great rifles and the warranty is transferable.

What are you looking to spend? LRB, SEI. Fulton, Enterprise or Texas can build you anything you want if you have the cash. You can even get a rear lugged reciever from SP or Enterprise if you want to spend the dough.

M700? Is that a Remington 700? You mean M24?
If so, it is apples and oranges. My two favorite rifles are the model 700 and the M14 type rifle, they are both accurate and well designed rifles, but each have their stong points.

$359 shipped isn't a bad deal for an M1A reciever.

yeah I was in your shoes a few months back.

I couldnt really decide and I had to ship my rifle almost halfway across the US to get a reputable m14 smith.

So I just did it myself in the end, used a polytech reciever and almost all USGI parts.
