Just a wild a** guess on my part, M16A1. The mag I have no clue on. It almost looks AKish

From an old ARF thread, it was supposed to be a ARVN officer with an early 40rd mag.

In this news report footage, you can see the same type of mag in the M16 of the soldier moving away from the cam towards the direction of an APC at the 1:11 mark.

        It's not a Colt M16.

It's a Armalite AR 18....notice the ejection port area and the ribs on the lower receiver.

        Yep, worked on those too.

          Definitely not an Armalite Ar-18.

My guess would be some kind of AR/AK mag combo. Either out of necessity (No ARVN supply of AR mags) or to increase load out.

I don't see those being to reliable - They would have had attach them mechanically either by joining lips or riveting. Probably held 40-50 rounds. I have heard stories of some pretty crafty field engineering.

Ah, you youngsters....I remember reading about this in the American Rifleman during the VN war. The South Vietnamese brazed or sweated an AK magazine to an M16 20 round magazine to get a 30 round magazine in 5.56mm. At that time the standard issue M16 magazine was strictly the 20 round magazine.

I've put my hands on a Chinese M-forgery (called a CQ) in .222 Remington. 222 has a little more body taper than .223(same shoulder, but shorter, so faster taper). Could be what's in the pic.

                  LOL, AR-18's don't look anything like M-16's.
