    The .17 is pretty cool

I finally had time to make my long awaited maiden voyage with the Marlin 917V w/BSA sweet 17 scope. I previously purchased from Natchez "one of each" in .17 HMR ammo. I had every brand and type on hand. I planned to first, zero at 25, then check each brand in 17 gr and 20 gr for accuracy. Next, the 14 year old son aka "Butthead" would execute water-filled plastic bottles to determine max effect at 25 yards. Then, we would move to 100 and shoot more water bottles for a combined test of accuracy and effect.

Conditions were sunny, some clouds, wind gusting to 15 and variable. I brought my Walther G22 and Ruger 10/22 in 22LR for comparison.

ACCURACY: At 25 they were all about the same......1 hole groups! When we switched to water bottles at 25, same deal. At 100, due to the wind, hits became problematic. Difference in brands of ammo is moot with my rifle. I'm buying what looks cool and is cheapest. Probably Remington V-max.

Effect: The 17 V-max in any brand wins. Massive impact on water bottles, even at 100. Interestingly enough, the 20 Gr Gamepoint by CCI made a rather small exit, but seemed to have a good thump on impact. The CCI TNT's are OK, but the V-max rules.

Comparison w/ 22LR: In the windy conditions, the G-22 with Aguila max loads and the 10/22 with CCI Velocitors bucked the wind better. The HMR definately had more effect on targets, but it was far easier to hit with the 22LR in the wind.

All-in-all, a very nice day shooting. The real kicker was the property owner showed up and after a nice chat gave me unlimited shooting privliges on his 600-acre parcel. Sweet!

I am impressed with the .17 and look forward to more shooting with it. I'm ordering a bunch of V-max ASAP!

Now try it on squirells. It is the most fun I have had since the 5MM Remington Magnum.

      Squirels+.17 HMR=pink cloud

It's a great round and a lot of fun. Just make sure you've got the right rifle. I bought an Excel Arms .17 rifle a while back. I've had to send it back TWICE and now the rifle hasn't broken but the rounds keep exploding, it's ridiculous. Never heard of any problems like that in any other rifle chambered in .17. When the rounds aren't exploding, it's a lot of fun.

I have the same rifle as 11Z50 and I love it. The semi bull barrel is not heavy, not light, just right, and the trigger is crisp. Marlin does this rifle right in my opinion. I have a bushnell dawn to dusk scope on it and it is tops as well.

.17HMR are squirrel destroyers. I have 3 rifles in .17HMR and they are tack driving machines. Congrates on your Marlin 917V.

Yep, the .17HMR is fun, but I try to shoot it on mostly calm days. As told above, wind moves the bullet around at 100 yds.
