I have that same Saiga hand guard and I gotta say it's pretty sweet. Might still think about getting a bolt on retainer for it. Then again I might not.

I have it on my saiga conversion and it actually works really well. You can also keep the stock gas tube. Just make sure to use loctite and you should be fine

I went with the SGM tri rail. Seems good so far.

This is what I've come up with after conferring with a few cal gunners and a lot of research.

Saigas require an AK gas tube, barrel notch for handguard retainer and a handguard retainer in order to use AK handguards that wrap around the gas tube and are partially held on by the handguard retainer.

That being said, would a handguard like this work since it does not contact the handguard retainer, barrel notch, or gas tube?

Provided it doesn't contact the gas tube or incorporate the barrel notch and handguard retainer then any handguard that fits an AK should also fit a Saiga, right?

Required an AKM gas tube, or you need to strip the shroud off the stock Saiga tube.

Click Boom, haha that's what I was going for. I still don't get why they specify handguards will work on an AK and not a Saiga without explaining the difference.

What's the deal with the super long Saiga-specific handguards that cover most of the barrel and all of the gas tube but AK-specific ones don't cover nearly that much?

So three options... SGM, MI, and Krebs. Not considering the large price differences, which one would be "best" if one wanted to keep it unconverted considering:
1. Mounting optic (Vortex red dot w/ low mount?)
2. Weight (unconverted is already a bit front heavy right?
3. ? (Any other considerations?)

The SGM looks like it has no optic rail, can anyone confirm?

I've never liked optics mounted on the gas tube so I opted for the tri rail. They do sell the same set up With quad rails . If you're into that sorta stuff.
