    Saiga .308 Rifles

    Hello All,

I have visited the forum many times over the years, but never joined or posted... That is changing!

Anyways, what brings me to register is this question: I am thinking about trading in my Remmington 700 7mm-mag w/ Leupold VX II rifle (used for deer and boar hunting up to about 350 yards) and getting a Saiga .308 to hunt with.

I really want an AR-10, but don't now (nor will in the foreseeable future due to our family budget not leaving enough real room for this kind of expense) have the money to drop on one. Based on what I have seen, though, a Saiga in .308 might be obtainable if I sell off my other hunting rifle.

Once I got this grand idea, my buddy told me that Saiga's are no longer being imported!!!! Anyone know, other than on gun-broker, how I could get one?

    Thank you,
    Wes

You might want to shoot one first. It's not even in the same ball park as your previous hunting rifle. If you decide that an AK type rifle will be sufficient for your hunting needs, it seems that there are many more Vepr's on the new gun market than Saiga's these days. Have you looked at the Vepr's?

Would a 308 Saiga even be accurate enough to take game humanely?

the AK platform is good on people sized targets to 400- 500 yards with the correct shooting technique...

the Saiga has one of the worst AK triggers due to the extra linkage for the sporter stock.

Modified or converted Saiga .308 can be as accurate as most bolt guns. The only benefit I see a bolt gun over one is slight weight reduction, other than that it's no worse than AR10 and better than FAL or even M1A.
Mine can group 1" without even trying.
Like mine so much I nearly bought a second one, the price was pretty good (-$700)

I really want a semi-auto just for the fun at the range and what not, but can't justify a toy (aka .223.) It would need to be dual purpose, hence the bigger caliber.

                I haven't heard of a Vepr... I'd be interested.

According to Wikipedia, you may be referring to a Female Urination Device... other than that, not sure what FUD means...

I figured that if I put a decent glass on it (I have a brand new Nikon ProStaff... should be good enough) and a better trigger, It should be ok.

If you have not shot an AK, find someone who owns one and try it out.

The gun would need to be converted to traditional AK configuration to make the trigger better.
This would also require federal 922r compliance of part replacement and a magazine lock.

All of the ak magazine locks are horrible at best.

I would look at an AK for a fun range gun and keep the bolt gun for hunting

I have taken two White Tail with my 22" converted 308 Saiga. They are very capable hunting rifles but do get a bit heavy after a few days of luggin em around.

I should mention that I also have a 1966 Savage 99c in .308... This will be a bush gun for boar. I am just looking for something a bit more unique than my bolt action Remington... and something that I could buy for not much more than I sold my 7mm for (I think i can get like 650 or 700 for the Remington with the Leupold on it.)

Many an animal has been killed with AK type guns. It's just a far cry from a bolt action or even an AR 10 in terms of accuracy and precision trigger etc.
