AR mag change while at the range?

I don't own an AR but a friend of mine was just telling me about his and how its not legal to change the mags out while in the field. Even with a bullet button. He says the only time you can remove a mag is for maintenance purposes only and the only way to legally load it is from the top.

Is this true? I thought the bullet button allowed you to change mags in the field because a tool was required to release it. I searched and came up with nothing

It is legal to remove the magazine on a BB rifle.

Of course it's legal? Wth? The range masters/officers during seize fires tells us to clear the chambers and remove all magazines, and if you have a safety flag, use it.

You need a "tool" to drop an AR rifle mag. This either means you have a bullet button, or you load from the top. Both are legal. Its pretty silly to top load when you can use a BB, but you could do it if you absolutely insisted on not having a BB (you couldnt have a mag release though).

That's what I was thinking. I have heard that fud from a couple people tho about not being able to change mags.

And we don't have range officers up here. Only 1 outdoor BLM range and 1 indoor range where nobody pays attention.

And if you go featureless then you don't need BB right?

If he is using a P50 lock or something similar, he's right. But, he wouldn't be able to remove the mag even for maintenance until he removed the upper completely and no longer had a semi auto centerfire rifle.

If you go featureless, you don't need or want a mag lock at all.

A featureless semi auto centerfire rifle with a fixed magazine of more than 10 rounds is an AW in CA. So, a mag lock will limit you to ten rounds. No mag lock or evil features and you can use any capacity ammunition feeding device you want.

Well, it depends on the way the mag lock works. Removing a mag on an old P50 build would be manufacturing an unregistered AW and a felony.

Your friends idea of how things works is a bit.. outdated.

PC clearly says magazine can be removed with the use of a tool and that a bullet counts as a tool. Modern style magazine locks where designed with the concept in mind.

Featureless and RAW can drop magazines all day long.

The law is in regard to detachable magazines without a tool, no attachable magazines. Your friend should revisit his own personal interpretations of California's illegal laws before spreading anymore FUD.
