stag upper model 2h hand guard rail replacements

so I'm building an ar, bit confused about whether or not I can remove the handguard and replace with quad or single rail.

I believe it's carbine length and that also impacts fitment?

What does free floating handguard refer to?

Sure can. You can just remove the plastic ones and replace them with railed forearms. MI, YHM, and others make them. You can also go free float, which means there is no contact between the forearm and barrel. I use a rifle length FF from MI on my 2H. Easy to install and very solid. Going with the rifle length it is necessary to grind down the front sight base then use a flip up type front sight mounted to the rail.

      There are lots of options.
The better ones will require removal of all the barrel hardware in order to replace the barrel nut with a freefloat style handguard.

San Francisco, although not looking to spend a fortune here.

I think I'm probably just going to want a foreend grip , and possibly a light.

Whats the main difference between the two piece, and free floats?

Difference in install, and performance? Cost?

I guess the free floats tend to release heat better and somehow increase accuracy by not sitting on the barrel.

            Something like that...

The whole upper has to come apart to install most freefloat systems.
There are some that clamp-on to the existing barrel nut, but you still have to somehow remove the delta ring.
The best method to do that is to remove the barrel nut so it's really the same amount or work for any of them.

The freefloats ar MUCH better for mounting a vertical foregrip because they are solid.
The snap-in rail systems almost all wobble when you mount a VFG on them.

There are some special tools required to tear down and rebuild an upper.
I charge less to do the work than the tools would cost you and I go through the upper and do my reliability fixes and updates as I'm putting it back together.

Okay, lets just say I want to put a quad rail on instead of my hand guards. Since this is free floating how much does parts and labor cost? Break it down for me. Also where are you located? What about shipping cost and turn around time.

Lastly, since this is a new upper... if I returned or resold my upper... and got one with a quad rail.... how much would the price difference be.... so yeah, just want to see if this is worth it for me. I'm sure you understand.

He charges about $40 and does an excellent job - including checking things out along the way.

You might also consider DD's Omega rail, which is FF but doesn't require breaking down the upper.

$40 to tear down and rebuild an upper.
Parts price depends on what handguard you choose.
Somewhere between $120 and $375 for the handguard system.
I'm just west of Los Angeles.
Return shipping cost is $15 for an upper within the state.
Turn around time depends on if the parts are in-stock or not.

What do you guys think about these?

Find the full line of firearms, parts and accessories from Daniel Defense, including AR-15’s, AR-Pistols and Bolt Action Rifles for sport shooting and hunting.

I want to replace the plastic guards and my rifle is already painted FDE. Any idea how much heavier this setup will be?

None... it weighs 8oz, about the same, if not less, than the plastic handguards.
