M1ANext to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pringing ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.

But a SCAR isn't...
OP, if you're looking for a semi-auto 308, then you're going to need to embrace the fact that they're heavy because that's about the only flavor of weight they come in.
If you like rifles with pistol grips, there are relatively inexpensive FAL's and LR-308's (AR-10) out there for half the price and all the reliability (or so I've heard) of a SCAR.
Any reason why an M1A isn't on your short list?Comment

So I'm looking for a semi-auto .308. Like my .223's, I like having a bolt action or two (have a Tikka and a Rem 700) and a semi or two (home built quality AR and a Tavor) and would like to replicate that pattern.
Unfortunately it seems to be harder in .308. I have a Tikka Sporter in .308 which is excellent but heavy to tote and would like to now purchase a semi. The AR10's just don't appeal to me - heavy, too tactical, whatever, but the SCAR is interesting (lighter, high quality or so I've read) and caters to my left-handed-ness by having a reversible bolt. The FNH FNAR is also interesting buy has no LH virtues. I'm not interested in an H&K/PTR/FAL thing. I'd like accuracy and the ability to reload spent cases.
I'd be open to semi-auto hunting models as well chambered in .308 that is either ambi, LH or has some LH features.
Any advice here?
Thx,
B
Here is what someone in another thread said about his SCAR:
I take my SCAR many places I would never dream of taking a PTR. I push the capability of the SCAR further than I would ever attempt with a PTR.
The 17 has become an all around gun for me. I use it for everything from a truck gun for defense, to an all season hunting rifle. Coyotes, Wolves, Deer, Elk, and Bear- they all get a piece of the SCAR.
The weight, the ability to fold to pack or stow away, the accuracy potential.
Not that a PTR can't be collapsible, they just aren't comfortable to shoot with that stock, and not that they can't be accurate but at distance they don't come close.
The SCAR has some modularity to it these days. You have a variety of options from what mags you'd like it to use to several forend options. What interchangeable barrel length you'd like to run to what charging handle you want and at what angle- reciprocating to nonreciprocating.
Long story short- The I've had a SCAR17 for several years now. I got one as soon as I was able to get my hands on one. It has been worth every penny.Last edited by Hoop; 05-05-2014, 7:36 PM.Comment
