Question about ejecting brass trajectory, is it a symptom of cycling issues?

    Hi there,

I recently built up my first AR platform rifle. I had previously purchased a Colt 6920 and modded it a bit and configured it the way I like it.

My second AR is the first I've put together, "from soup to nuts"

I've noticed on occasion that I get a Stovepipe on my home build.

I've also noticed that the angle of ejection of the spent brass is much different on the two guns, the Colt v. the home build.

On the Colt, the brass comes out in a rearward fashion, bouncing off the brass deflector and heading sideways at roughly a 100deg. angle from the ejection port.

On the home build, the brass is ejecting basically forward, at a roughly 15deg. angle from the ejection port. I've noticed brass marks on the right, rear edge of the hand guard.

Is the difference in trajectory an indication of a cycling issue?

    this might help a bit.

Sounds like your colt is 100% spot on functioning normally and you might want to try a heavier buffer in your home build

That answers my question perfectly, thanks! Will try a heavier buffer and see how it goes.
