    Should I get a vepr 7.62x54r or a Svt 40?

    Help me decide fellow calgunners

Vepr 7.62x54r or Svt 40? I have tons of ammo (both surplus and recordable). I like having the history but I'd also like near 100% reliability. Anyone have either (or both) that they can tell me the pros and cons about? Thanks.

SVT40 has so much more character than a VEPR, but that's just my opinion

I would go for the Vepr Hunter.

It's not going to be fun for you when something breaks on your SVT-40 or when you want another magazine that works.

I had the same internal debate for a few months and settled on the Vepr. For me, the practicality of the Vepr outweighed the coolness of the SVT-40. They both do the same job, but the Vepr is a finer, more elegant and less picky instrument.

Vepr is more reliable and are fine shooting heavy ball. Svt can too, but most prefer light ball.

I have an SVT-40 and love it, but, yeah, I'd get the Vepr...

You have psl? Those look like a tough 54r rifle.

If you can get an all original SVT40 it would make for a great collectible

but for function and utility Vepr all the way.

I have a Finn captured SVT-40... Although it's a cool rifle, I rarely shoot it. It's more of a collector piece. If you are a shooter, get a VEPR.

I also have a PSL, it'a about as accurate as SVT-40 (2-3 MOA). However, it does not like heavy balls and the accuracy decrease dramatically after rapid fire. However, it does looked cool as heck!

Vepr, they can handle all the loads plus it's easier to find parts if something breaks

I have both and a PSL and of the three the PSL is my favorite. The SVT-40 is a close second. Parts for both of these are getting rare as a hens tooth. The Tactical VEPR with 24" barrel from Atlantic is still a fun gun but also a 6 MOA gun with light ball. I'm told they prefer heavy ball and I have a few cases of that, so I'll try some out next time I take it to the range.

The PSL is a 2-3 MOA gun even with the fixed 4X Russian scope on it. Just plain fun to shoot.

Haven't really tried to shoot groups with the SVT. Mine has the sniper rails, so I'm thinking of putting a period correct repro scope on it.

VEPR's aren't likely to go anywhere, so my advice would be to get a SVT. Once these are all gone, they are gone. Same goes for the PSL. Prices on these have been climbing steadily for awhile now. All three of these have been utterly reliable with no issues whatsoever. My SVT is a aresenal re-worked one with forced matched numbers. It functions perfectly and feeds correctly from the mag.

Whichever one you choose, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun.
