Want to do a super lightweight AR build

I have this stripper lower receiver that is made out of magnesium that has been sitting in my safe for like 2 years. And the other day I was thinking, you know, this receiver is significantly lighter than an aluminum one, why don't I make it into the lightest possible rifle I can? But I don't know where to find any parts to make this possible. Any ideas?

A search could have helped you...

The first 2 pages is where you'll find the info everybody already pretty much knows... the pages after there are where you find the secretsss

Going lightweight in just about anything, such that it will actually make a difference, usually entails exponential costs... so that's one thing you have to consider before going that route with your build.

All receivers are light. #1 get a light barrel IMHO. Then worry about shaving a bit more off by getting lighter stock, handguards or rail, etc... pencil barrel AR's are LIGHT. Then keep it simple.

Thinking about it now, if I think of my hand as close to the fulcrum or balancing point, the best places to get going are the barrel, handguard, and the stock. Like you're saying, pencil barrel, ap custom cf rail-less handguard (BCM KMR if you have the coin), MFT Battlelink Stock (or ACE AR-UL).

uhhh... what about CNC machining some speed holes into the lower receiver and upper?

Can't get any lighter than imaginary LPK, imaginary stock and an imaginary LW barrel. Not only does it weight next to nothing, it takes imaginary ammo which won't break the bank. No need to thank me, i just like to help out where i can.

I think this lady knows where to find the ammo you speak of...

I figured out the same thing.

I went with the BCM upper with
                    1. ELW barrel -they reprofile the barrel to maintain accuracy and it only budges to fit the gas block
                    2. KMR - magnesium/aluminum, 30% lighter than just aluminum while still having a top rail
                    3. Steel mounting collar - expands at a different rate that the alloy receiver to enhance accuracy as the gun heats up
                    4. Mid length gas system - softer shooting
                    5. Full Automatic BCG - heavier, but more reliable function

You can save some weight if you get an upper without the dust cover and forward assist...like on the S&W M&P Sport

                    Lower:
Enhanced trigger guard - Magpul polymer one is both lighter and less expensive
Buttstock - MFT Battlelink Minimalistic Stock. Light simple stable w/flare for cheekweld

Sling - no metal. I'm using a Viking with polymer sliders, D-rings and using 550 paracord for attachment to the gun.

Sights - I have an EOTech mounted, but you can go with a Aimpoint H-1 for a bit more money or just iron sights for a bit less...both weight and money

It may be a gimmick, but I'd totally buy that skeletonized lower. Friggin cool is what that is.

You can shave a couple more ounces from your LPK with parts from V7.

Do you have an accurate scale to weigh that magnesium lower?
My CMMG anodized stripped lower weighs 8.8oz while my stripped completed Quinten Defense lower weighs 9.2oz. The QD has the trigger guard built in and has a beveled mag well so it should weigh a little more.

@44fred - my mag tactical lower weighed in a 5.88oz. That also includes the enhanced trigger guard (its incorporated into the receiver).
