Bought half dozen from them and all fired flawless, never heard of a problem with a CMP rifle. I cleaned them all before firing and used CMP ammo.

      OP, congrats on the Garand.
I opted for the CMP "special" so it was almost like a new gun; no more than a once over and lubrication required. There's not as much history and its not collectable or anything but its a good shooter!

I looked on the website recently and could find out how to order, how were you able to get it?

Both of my CMP Garands were good to go and I am sure the "have it checked by a gunsmith" is just covering their butt. Clean it and give it a good once over and you will be fine.

There's always a slight chance you'll a gun with a bad part resulting in malfunctions.

I've come across complaints back in the day on the old CMP forums where people had broken oprods, fragmented oprod springs, etc. But stuff coming out of the CMP now probably are getting more "quality control" in that the CMP is having to piece together guns now, so must guns being shipped out are getting more hands-on treatment than in years past.

First thingyou should is is a complete tear down ,clean and properly grease the rifle and replace the Op Rod spring. Yes it will function with the spring as is but may be 50 plus years old and shoud be replaced
The bolt hits the receiver heel when fired and the spring is what cushions the blow as well as affects function

You know it's funny: I have a CMP Garand and 1903- both I bought when I was maybe 19. The Garand wasn't checked, but I took the 1903 in. They head spaced it- fine, then did a test fire and came back with a case with a crack down the neck. I was concerned. They were concerned. After much back and forth between the smiths they agreed the ammo they had could be old and crappy. Re-test(s) fine. So yeah, I don't know what you should do Enjoy you Garand, enjoy less buying 30-06...

That said, I recommend that you follow the instructions from CMP if you have any concern whatsoever that your rifle might be unsafe to fire.
I'm waiting for mine, would be nice to have a range trip

after reading that, check the eligibility requirements link on the same page.
There's more to it than throwing down some money but it's worth it.
