BLM shooting

When you guys go shooting on BLM land, what do you guys shoot at? Do you guys setup targets or just shoot openly?? Thinking about driving out to BLM land to shoot but wanted to see what other people used.

You bring your own target stands and targets. BLM is just that, LAND, and nothing else.

Two saw horses, 1-2"x10"x6', and bowling pins. You can shoot bowling pins with a hand gun all day and they will take a lot of damage before they give out. Paper targets, and old plywood. Just police up your targets and brass before you leave. Better yet, take out more than you brought in.

To try out my new FAL, I setup a long range target I made out of an old baby swing and a 12" manhole cover that was about 1/2" thick steel.
It worked perfect until my brothers bad shooting with his m38 destroyed the stand.

Emphasis on the last statement will go a looooonnnnnngggggggggg way in improving the shooter's image in the eyes of the people using the same land to enjoy their recreational sports and therefore more tolerance and acceptance. Don't mean to preach just want to ensure the future of my hobby and addiction

I usually get them at Turner's for $3.00 each. I still have 6 in the back of my truck from the last time I went to the sticks. Three of us were shooting at them with hand guns(.38,9mm,.40,.44,.45) and a SkS for a portion of the day. They will still be good for at least one more trip. YMMV depends on what you are hitting them with. A little pricey at 6 for $20.00 compared to paper but, easy to clean up.

I've never asked at the bowling alley. I'd bet they would hook you up if you did.

The only thing is you have to keep setting them up.

We also shot paper targets and phone books taped in bunches. I like the books for long distance because the confetti spray lets you know when you've hit them.

I was able to get some pins from a bowling alley once. The trick is, you have to call ahead first. Talk to the manager. Ask if they are going to give out any pins. Make sure he knows it's for something other than bowling - my story was that I was doing an art project and I needed some pins. The story flew, and the manager at one alley saved me a whole box. It was awesome! They were big and heavy, and the real deal. They were very tough - they withstood dozens of handgun hits, even .223 hits. Wished I would have kept them, but I ended up throwing them away because they took up too much space at home.

Call ahead of time. I learned that alleys have schedules for replacing pins, and sometimes they sell them instead of giving them away. Keep calling, you'll find an alley that will give rather than sell, and then you're in luck!

mostly I shoot at old bottles, TVs, computers, used oil filters, and stuff like that. It GREAT, but the only downside is it is all sharp when you are done so you have to leave it.

i like using a phone book. besides that, old propane tanks work the best. oh, one time, we brought a computer monitor and powered that thing up. we shot it and it sparked. it was kewl.

Because its organic. give the rodents and other animals time and it will disappear so in a way yeah they vaporize.

I have made various steel targets on bars that swing and others that set up on posts. They can be used forever if you only shoot handguns under 44 magnum at them. However, high power rifles will penetrate and destroy those targets pretty quick. (which is why I don't shoot them with rifles).

These are very useful for actual practical handgun training and not just plinking away (though you can do that too).

The only downside to these targets is they are heavy.
