i apologize if it has been discussed here before, which i am sure has, which one would you prefer? and why? i see a lot of people going for AR-type rather than AK, even in places where it's legal to get either one. what's the reasoning? accuracy? can't be reliability.

AK vs AR

Get both!
Both are fun to shoot!
AKs require more metal work to build. That could be a dealbreaker for some.Constitutionally, officials cannot license or register a fundamental right.

+1 on watching Heat.
An AR is a real rifle that you can hit stuff with. Lots of people know how to make it shoot real good. There are lots of accessories. It is American.
An AK is not so good for hitting stuff with. It is also a commie gun. If you want a 30 cal gun, buy a Garand or an M1A.

P.S. I should say that I am sort of being tongue-in-cheek. The more guns, the merrier.Last edited by joebob; 05-18-2006, 1:59 PM.Comment

Hey! Our off-list AR rifles are also designed by commies!

Both are two of the greatest battle rifles and weapons platforms ever created. They are different in many aspects and have their pros and cons in a variety of areas. You really have to define "better" to make that call. From my experience operationally with both:
Accuracy - AR on average, though some East German AKs were deadly accurate
Reliability - AK, hard to beat thanks to wide open machine tollerances
Firepower - Tough to say, more to do with the ammo than anything. AK rounds definitely deliver more energy at range than AR rounds.
Magazines - AR mags lighter, gravity assisted and can carry more ammo overall for same weight, but AR mags are damaged easier than AK mags
Iron Sights - More personal pref, but I would argue the AR has this one beat.
Maintanence - AK, without a doubt. Simple, easy.--BrandoComment

Well, if your going M16 vs AK47 thats one thing...
but to compare semi-auto variants. I will go with the AK, I don't care for 7.62x39 or .223.
Since they now have better variants of the AK... I.E. Saiga
I prefer the AK. Though the same can be said for the DPMS Panther Bull in 308. I don't care for the pistol grips as long as its comfortable to shoot, like the feel of an M1A or a nice Remington bolt.
In a tactical sense. The AR dominates the AK, you can eject a bad round, check the weapon in the dark and switch firemodes/safety without taking your eyes off a target and being in an alert position. Besides its easier to repair.
Though the standard AK beats the standard AR on close quarters with the more powerful round and you CANNOT beat the reliability of an AK47.
I say the AR is better, but I'm an AK guy.
If you can't tell yet. I still want to get a Saiga 308.

have you ever shot an AK? now, if it was so hard to hit stuff with, why would it be so popular, or let me rephrase -- the most popular AG in the world?Originally posted by joebobAn AK is not so good for hitting stuff with. It is also a commie gun.Comment

i am more than familiar with both of them, i wasn't asking for an advice on what to buy and why. i am just curious as for why people prefer one over the other.Originally posted by UnknownassailantYah, someone link him to Mad Ogre's comparison site and let him make up his mind after that.Comment

I prefer the AR Platform and own 5 times as many as I own AK's.
In addition to being the weapon I cut my teeth on and carried/used/shot for years as a Marine...there is an abundance of configurations and accessories available to build a rifle to suit your needs.
All that said...the gun I keep in my truck is an underfolder AK.
They're rugged, reliable, alot of fun and cheaper to replace.
Buy em both if you can!Comment

that's exactly what i thoughtOriginally posted by The Soup NaziAccuracy, not wanting to buy a weapon from a country that denies its own citizens RKBA, watching Heat, its the American weapon, etc.
btw, if you don't want to buy "weapon from a country that denies its own citizens RKBA" you should definetely stop buying american. especially SA -- they are based in IL.Comment

Each rifle type serves it's purpose.
Close/medium range combat with high demand for reliability AK is champion.
Positioning warfare with medium/long range AR probably is better choice.
Buy both even if you can't afford. Maney well invested anyway.-----------------------------------------

The supposed AK 'reliability advantage' is moot.
Various US guys using 'liberated' AKs in Iraq have reported not-that-great performance - jamming, FTEs, etc. Some of this may be due to ammo quality issues, though.
A sharp dude with an AR/M16, well-maintained, will do just fine.
It's not the gun, it's the shooter.
And when you go to 77gr ammo you can have all sortsa fun - bigger deeper holes at longer ranges. One guy on ARFCom reports (and I think I can tell from his writing style and lack of bragging etc the veracity of statements) that he used an 5.56 scoped SPR w/heavy bullets to take out a Mahdi satellite dish (forget the Iraqi city) at 500+yds. It took around 70 rounds over some large fraction of an hour.
No AK can do that.
The modern AR has 40+ years of evolution in its genes. It'll only get better.
The accuracy in a crap heavier bbl no-name AR, when used w/XM193 55gr ammo, generally astounds me.
