    Mini-30 issue

So, I have an older (189 series) Mini-30 that I added an Accu-strut, Choate handguard and most recently, a Hogue stock.

I noticed with the Hogue stock that the action doesn't feel as smooth as it did in the original wood stock, and if I apply slight upward pressure on the charging handle as I bring the bolt into battery, something hangs up and could possibly cause a FTF or jam.

Do you think it's hanging up on the Hogue stock somewhere, since it doesn't appear to get stuck on the original stock? Any help would be appreciated.

I mainly added the Hogue stock for a longer LOP, but it definitely has trouble cycling compared to the original wood stock. I guess I could return the Hogue and look for a pad of some kind to extend the LOP on the original if I can't figure out what's rubbing or hanging on the new one.

Up would suggest the hand guard from my perspective. May be a problem mating the aftermarket guard to the other aftermarket stock. You know, the stacking tolerances thing.

Worth a shot. I'll try it with the stock handguard in a few minutes and see if that changes anything.

It is also worth noting that when I was reading reviews on the Hogue stock for the Mini-14 some people mentioned problems with older models fitting quite right, not sure what series they were referencing, but you may need additional parts for a proper adaptation for a 189.

Well, it looks like you were right! It seems to cycle fine with the original handguard. I'm pretty sure you were spot-on about the different parts stacking tolerances. Too bad, I like the look of the Choate handguard, but it was inexpensive and I'd rather have the rifle working properly than just looking good . Thanks again!

I have a 196 model mini 30 and it functions flawlessly with either my Wood Ruger stock, or my Hogue.
First, make sure you transferred the liner over to the hogue. Second, just have a look to see where it is hanging up, but it sounds like maybe the op rod is rubbing somewhere.
Time to do a little creative filing/sanding I would imagine.
Just be patient and look where the stock or handguard are rubbing. Especially near the op rod/charging handle and I think you will find the problem.

              Good luck!

Okay, so it turns out I actually just didn't follow rule number one, to RTFM. I skipped a step installing it the first time; it now works fine with the Choate handguard as well.

It was the liner. Forgot to transfer it, d'oh!
