Once converted it can no longer use the original Saiga magazines (AK magazines only).

Do not forget to comply with the Fed 922r parts compliance when you convert it to accept AK magazines.

Saiga mags will not generally fit afterwards.

I have heard that if you file the bullet guide off the saiga magazines they will then fit converted saigas.

True also you can set the bullet guide back some so both mags will feed and function.

            Depends on caliber.

5.45 No bullet guide needed and accepts 74 mags without any mods.

7.62x39, After bullet guide installed, original mags will not fit and mag release latch needs slight mod to accept AKM mags.

My Saiga mags functioned fine in my Saiga 7.62x39 with about 30 seconds with a file after bullet guide installation.

This is not always the case. Mine reliably uses both Saiga mags and AK mags after the bullet guide install. I know mine is not in the majority, but it is worth noting that it is not an absolute.

Compare a reg. AK mag with the saiga mag.....the saiga mag has a "lip" built in for a bullet guide and the tang that snaps into the mag catch is thinner.....if u file some of the lip area down then u can use that saiga mag no problem....as for the part that snaps into the catch.....since it is thinner....there might be some back and forth movement but in my experience no issues with feeding....saiga mags are very good mags BTW....they have a metal liner and hold up very well

I needed no modifications on the front end to use the Saiga mags after the bullet guide install. The catch on the rifle did need to be filed down which is normal. But I did not modify any of my mags and they all fit fine.
