MI SS12G2 w/MBUS lighter than carbine length Magpul furniture

I bought my AR free float and have since worked on getting parts for more, including an extra upper.

    I weighed 2 combinations:
    1) MI SS12G12 with 3 panels (2 flat, 1 hand stop), MBUS front, low profile gas block, gas tube, MI barrel nut: 14.5oz

    2) Unknown brand barrel nut, F marked FSB, gas tube, Magpul carbine length handguard w/heat shield: 15.7oz

While there's no denying that the MI stuff is more expensive, I had assumed that it would be a little heavier. Turns out that, for the length I have, it both gives you more room to grip and weighs less.

Add a front sight to the MI

Thats more fair since the other has an A2 FSB

MI SS rail was super light, and actually pretty dang nice. Very happy with that purchase.

I'm so happy with my choice to use the MI SS Gen 2 for my lightweight carbine. Its right at 6lbs unloaded.

I've actually been considering switching to the MI rail on my carbine. This might persuade me even further.

Can someone link to this product? Googling for "MI SS12G12" doesn't bring up anything. I'm currently building a lightweight upper and am interested. Was planning to go with the MOE handguard too...

It's actually called the Midwest Industries SS Gen 2 and they come in various lengths.

This is the keymod version that is even lighter. Barely, but still lighter.

Compared a lot of different metal hand guards and for their respective lengths, I think the MI SS gen2 and Noveske NSR are the lightest free floating ones.

I just bought a 15" ss gen2, question is it hard to install?

Its not hard to install the handguard. You have to replace the barrel but to the one that goes with the handguard. That could be difficult due to front sight blocks, pinned muzzles and such. The hanguard is just secured with to clamping bolts on the bottom.

Best bang for the buck free-float AR handguard IMO.

Almost as light and nice as the Noveske NSR (I have both), but WAY less expensive.
