Time to do more reading I guess. At $500 I'm probably better off with a unconverted Saiga.

Norinco SKS questions?

Yeah, and the tech sights actually work well, so $250 wouldn't be unreasonable for it.
As for the Yugos, there are 2 main types. The older one, which looks like any other SKS. And the newer one with the built-in grenade launcher, which would have to be removed or modified to comply with state law. Both are good, but as Mossy said, not chrome-lined. The barrels on some of these can be rough. Also, that stupid gas valve cut-off for the grenade launcher is often broken, but these can be fixed with a new $20 valve from any of the companies that make new ones. Truthfully, if you can live with the non chrome barrel, the Yugos are a decent choice. They tend to cost less than other SKS variants, and will still shoot "minute of man" out to 200 yards or so without too much trouble. Plus, by the time they make it to California, they have usually been monkeyed with enough that their collector's value is shot, so adding/modifying them doesn't really change their value.
