    Quick question about gas

If you're running a 14.7" midlength, and experience short stroking, what can you do?

JP Low mass carrier? Take some weights out of the buffer?

    Rifle buffer/tube?

Or drill out the gas port?

I'm not experiencing anything, but if I do have a problem I'd like some options.

Adjustable gas block, change buffer-spring, carrier weight, or better yet just go with a 16in middy.

What's likely to be more undergassed a 14 .7 inch mid length or a 16 inch true dissipator?

It depends on what's causing the short stroking... is it round based or gas based? Assuming everything else is built to spec and nothing inside the rifle is loose.

As stated above, if it's gas based meaning your gas-port isn't to spec and not feeding enough gas back to cycle everything... opening the gas port is the direct solution, as long as your port is NOT to spec. If your port is to spec, than something else is the issue. The adjustable gas block may not help in this situation because there's not enough gas entering the block to adjust for... the block is not a multiplier, it can only work with diminishing pressure. So if you don't want to touch the gas system itself, lightening the load it has to push is a good option. Keep in mind that this may produce a faster cycling system that may cause feeding issue and bolt-bounce.

All things being equal... I would say that majority of short-stroking is actually round based, meaning the ammo you're using is over-pressure. Over pressure round will expand your case against the chamber tighter, while at the same time attempt to push the bolt back a lot earlier than the chamber pressure allows... thus introducing drag tot he equation. The drag is just enough to slow down the bolt and cause it to short stroke because the gas pressure has dropped too much before the bolt can unlock and move backwards. For this... check your reloads or get better ammo. Keep away from high pressure surplus stuff that is meant for MGs.

          Probably the true dissy.

Most of the short stroking reported on 14.7 middys seems to come from lower power commercial ammo (ie wolf) but as with anything YMMV

A true dissy as in with a rifle gas system out of a 16" barrel? That's all kind of problems rolled into one, your dwell time is way too short and it'll cause timing issue that'll just be a mess.

So answer your ?... the dissiy. The main problem is that by the time the bullet pass the gas port and start to introduce gas into the system to cycle, the bullet has already left the barrel, dropping the pressure even more.
