    6mm AR Tubo 40 vs. .243 WSSM?

My understanding is that the performance difference between the two is about 200 fps (out of a 24 inch tube)?

Pros for the turbo seem to be an ability to use common uppers with a custom barrel/extension and relatively easy to make ammo. Pros for the WSSM seem to be a little more velocity and loaded commercial ammo.

Cons for the turbo are lack of velocity, lack of loaded ammo, lack of commercial brass. Cons for the WSSM seem to be proprietary upper (I'd have to buy a complete instead of building my own) and perhaps barrel life.

Anybody have any real world velocities for the turbo out of a 20 - 22 inch barrel? How about for the WSSM? I'm kicking around the idea of building a 'something different' hunting rig with 20 - 22 inch barrel and prefer the idea of assembling my own instead of buying (I like to build things).

I'm not familiar with the 6mm AR turbo, but the 243 WSSM barrel life concerns are unwarranted. There was concern with the 223 WSSM being a barrel burner and rightly so, it is one of the fastest commercially loaded cartridges! The 223 WSSM is basically a 308 necked down to 223. This concern bled over to the other WSSM cartridges. The 243 WSSM has a barrel life similar to a 243, or even slightly better due to case design and the 25 WSSM has a barrel life somewhere between a 257 Roberts and a 25-06.

The 6mmAR turbo has plenty of powder capacity. It is near ideal for this bullet weight with good loading density. More powder is just going to add to the recoil and barrel wear without adding much else.

It's an easy cartridge to make, it would be a great first wildcat for the new reloader.

is an overbore caliber but the barrel might last if it's hunting gun

If you'll be shooting 100% magazine-length loads you could have Whitely chamber the Turbo40 with less freebore. The round chambers from magazines (with a 6.5SPC follower) very well.

PM me if you have any Qs.

Thanks for all the info everyone.
With any luck I'll be coming back with more questions in the coming months (being the beginnings of a long term project and all).
