New E.R. Shaw barrel won't come clean

I have a new E.R Shaw AR-15 rifle barrel. No matter how many time I run the brush and swabs through the swabs come out black. Am I missing something?
If I just use swabs they look clean, but after the brush they are black again. Thanks for any advise.

What happens if you wash your car with an oily sponge?

Shoot it. I heard the bullets do a great job of cleaning gunk inside the barrel.

So you brush, then swab till the swabs(patches I'm guessing?) are clean, right?

Why would you run the brush again? Ok, ignoring that part, did you clean the brush? If not, the crap on the brush is just going to get deposited right back into your barrel.

You can brush - patch - brush - patch - brush - patch - brush - patch for eternity and get dirty patches if you keep running a dirty brush down the bore.

              Estragon,

I have an ER Shaw AR15 too and my barrel was pretty dirty. It was so bad it took me practically one full day to get most of the copper fouling out!

In you case depending on how long you allow the solvent to do it's job what your experiencing is the fouling being brought up to the surface. Once you use the bore brush you scraping the fouling off the bore. That's why your wet patches are always dirty. If your patches aren't coming out blue or green then your one step better than I was.

Since you already scrubed the hell out of the bore now I would say all you need is more dwell time to let the solvent work better. I usually soak my bores down with two or three wet patches and then clean everything else first thus letting the bore soak for around one half hour. Then follow up with brushes if necessary and then dry patches.

Rifle bores don't need to be squeaky clean. Just do a good job once and have more fun shooting.

It was a brand new brush and I cleaned it between passes. The patches still come out solid black. Eventually I just gave up.

Just keep shooting it until accuracy really drops off and then give it a clean. I don't clean to the point where my patches come out just as white as when they went in. If most of the gunk is out then that's good enough for me.

If that bothers you, never try to get a Mosin Nagant clean.

You have a rough bore with a lot of drill "chatter" marks left in it. All the little grooves in the bore hold powder and jacket fouling. You have to push the brush and patches along the length of the barrel so they can't get all the way into the bottom of the grooves left in the bore.

That's why people pay more for premium barrels that are hand lapped by the manufacturer.

Some people swear by the fire lapping kits for barrels like this.

If you're using a solvent meant to clean copper, it will react with the brass brush and the swab will appear to have green/black stuff on it. This is just solvent.

The worst thing you can do to a barrel is clean it. Don't clean it unless its dirty.

A new barrel and copper fouling's? Somethings not adding up here. I was told, by E.R. Shaw, they only sell the blanks and don't put the barrel extension on. So who supplied the barrel? If you haven't shot it, you shouldn't be getting Yellow Metal deposits out of it. What solvent are you using? Was the Barrel new? To many variables.

Start over. Clean your brushes with brake or carb. cleaner. Run a patch soaked with CLP (or whatever) down the barrel & clean/detail the other parts of your AR. Make sure it's soaked. I like to clean everything else up at this time. Then I go back with a Dewey Chamber rod & AR chamber brush. I scrub the chamber/lugs & let it sit. Then I go back with a dry patch & see what I can get out of there. Soak, scrub, patch, drink, repeat.

Don't listen to most of this, if it's a new barrel, get it clean.

EDIT, If your local I'll give you a chamber brush, if you don't have one?
