It's a long term project but if you want to PM me we can talk about it.

Tagged. Was waiting for the Mag Tactical upper to materialize, I picked up the lower last spring. I'm looking at a similar LW build for the missus.

It's important to note the MT Gen4 lower failed during a mortaring drill, it had a Magpul UBR stock that was not fully collapsed. The other point of discussion regarding this lower has been about the supplied trigger/hammer pins. I've spoken to the folks at Geissele and they say the SSA is GTG with this lower, they have run a MT Gen4 build for several months with no issues. And for the sheer humor, the posts that see the word "magnesium" and question whether this lower would burst into flames...those are just priceless.

Ah, think I found it. Looks like it failed while mortaring it, not while shooting. hmmm

It was because they mortar manned it...don't do that

You could check out V7 Weapon Systems. They make things like light weight end plates, take down pins, and port doors. Definitely the last things I would look at, but hey if you are trying to save weight!

You could also wait for the BCM KMR rail, a 13inch rail with barrel nut is supposed to come in just under 8oz. From what I've seen it is going to be one of the lightest that I've seen, lighter than the NSR and the MI offerings...if you can't tell I'm all in on Keymod!

I don't have an accurate scale but my AR is 16" M4 profile barrel, no muzzle device, MI SS12G2, Magpul BUIS, currently has an M4 stock and Hammerhead grip but the stock is changing soon. I wonder what it weighs.

edit: http://vuurwapenblog.com/calc.html doesn't have an option for no muzzle device, and I don't know what spec my BCG is or whether their MI SS 12 is G2 or not, but if I had an A2 flash hider I'd be at 6.31, so I should be something like 6lb 3oz... but who knows about accuracy.

I too have been researching this. My simple reason for wanting a super light AR build is because whenever I put my 9lb AR into my wife's hands, as she tries to aim, she wavers around and complains, "this thing is heavy." I run into the same thing with kids, usually the under 15 year olds. All we are doing is plinking so it's not a crucial, life-saving gun I want to build, I kind of want to build one as an exercise, sort of as a challenge. I have enough lowers sitting around where I can use one just for this, without taking one up that will be more specialized so I will be using an aluminum lower, I am not yet sold on Poly lowers in general. The ACE Arul for sure. DPMS makes a stripped upper that has no dust cover or shell deflector so that saves an ounce or two. From what I have read, the weight savings over a 14.5" barrel with a muzzle device as compared with a 16" barrel with just a thread protector is negligible so I am going with the 16" pencil barrel, probably with just a thread protector on it.

I wanted to build a super light featureless originally, but not sure if I want a grip fin. My featureless AK has one and not sure if I like them. I like the idea of the Hammerhead as well as the Thordsen FRS15 but both of those add a lot of weight over a bullet buttoned AR with the ACE Arul alone. A guy over on AR15.com built a nice looking rifle that is 5lbs, 4oz. Definitely need to decide how much money you will spend and how far you are willing to go. There are skeletonized BCGs, you drill things out, carbon round foregrips, you can save few grams even an oz. here and there, but you are giving up reliability, strength, etc. so you have to ask yourself exactly how light you want to go, how much it is worth it to you, etc. and what you want to use it for. For me, as a range toy/plinker, I am not concerned about heavy use/reliability/HD/SHTF use at all. But I don't want to spend a fortune either for the same reasons. No competition or anything like that so it doesn't make sense to put a lot of money into it either.

Good luck and let us know what you discover. There are how to build a lightweight AR threads all over the web so it just becomes a matter of research to see what others have done and what their experiences are.

I built up one of the MAG lowers with the new MFT minimalist stock for my wife and threw on a cheap PTAC upper when it was on sale at PSA a while back. The upper is just temporary until the MAG upper comes out. The lower is 1lb 14oz complete and the upper is 4lbs even with no sights or optic. Put on a strike fire but I have a SPARC for it when finished.

I allways suggest going here for a light weight lower

If you do a search, BCM has a new set of LW barrels coming out in a couple months which will be lighter than their current LW barrels.

Also their new KMR rail in 14 inch will weigh 7.7 ounces including the barrel nut.

                          Search M4Carbine.net for extensive discussions.

I would be wary of going all in on Mag Tac.

sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

Trying to save weight by using a LW BCG is nuts.
