    Mag Tactical magnesium lowers

I stopped by the LGS today to pick up a couple lowers. Ended up buying 2 Mag Tactical magnesium lowers, one black and one FDE. They feel WAY lighter than I would have guessed, and the price wasn't much more than the cheapest lowers they had.

So, of course I should have figured out whether or not they're decent before buying them but I might as well ask now.

Anyone have experience with them, or other Magnesium lowers? I don't plan on doing anything crazy with them, one will probably be a 5.45x39 build and I'm not sure on the other.

My biggest concern is whether or not if it catches fire and burns you. Magnesium is known to burn in my books. Actually bought magnesium wheels for my car and it caught fire =p

Wow I would've never guessed they would use magnesium for a lower. It is lighter but is it worth it? Mind if I ask how much they were?

Good luck with your new lowers.

Retail is $179, I think the cheapest lowers they had in stock were $150. I didn't pay retail.

I suppose it's only a 3oz difference but for just the stripped lower it feels like a lot.

I see it as only a " look at my unconventional metal lower" kind of thing. Not worthy the risk , but to each his own

I figure that if plastic lowers work well it's unlikely that magnesium will be a problem.

I'll most likely do a lightweight build when I assemble them, I need to figure out places to save weight other than the planned pencil barrel.

this case looks more ammo related, but you wanted some feedback about the lowers.

He had a round decide to explode, which I imagine is the fault of the ammo. It put a hole in his lower when it did so. It wasn't the fault of the lower.

I think the lesson from the mortaring issue was compounded by his use of the ubr stock and that it wasn't fully collapsed. As for catching fire, some armchair chemists need a remedial course in metallurgy. MagTac lower is magnesium alloy, the same stuff racing rims and other parts when weight savings over forged/billet aluminum.

I've spoken to the folks at Geissele Automatics about the extended trigger/hammer pins for this lower. The word from GA was that they had been running one of these lowers with a SSA fcg for several months and they felt these lowers were GTG.

I picked up one of these to be mated to a nonreciprocating side charging upper, and lightweight barrel and free floating forearm. I don't anticipate repeating any of the reported issues.

I like your plan for it. Side charging seems cool, although I'm not sure what use I have for it. What parts were you planning? I'll probably use a lightweight barrel and free floating as well, although I don't know what.

Yeah, "Big Shots" in SD stop carrying those cause of the POS that makes those lowers

The liberal see's the glass as half full and tries to take more.
The conservative see's glass as half empty and tries to keep it that way.

Mag Tac lowers are good to go.

Build some nice rifles, and ignore the armchair scientists.
