Lightweight rails vs. standard carbine handguard

Okay, so I am thinking about redoing my lightweight upper. I am going to look at replacing the A1 gas block/sight tower with a low profile, lighter weight gas block without the sight. But this leaves me with no front sight anymore. That started me looking for a set of rails that I might substitute in. I was looking at the MI lightweight rails, and in the carbine length, they come in at 7.1 oz, including the barrel nut. Does anybody know how this compares to a standard carbine handguard/barrel nut/delta ring set-up? I have heard conflicting reports that it is actually lighter than the standard set-up. Comments from the peanut gallery on this? Yes? No? Maybe? Does anybody have an idea on what I might be able to use instead?
