CMMG or a RRA 9mm AR. Both have dedicated 9 mm lowers and use metalform or uzi mags.

Just an FYI, but the Tavor will have a 9mm conversion kit available for it in the future. Of course, you'll need to invest about $2800 to buy the 5.56 rifle and the forth coming 9mm conversion kit.

Thought I would post this up from a suggestion I made earlier. Just a quick scribbly I did hear at the computer table. Would be a pretty simple design and with a railed top end , could accept any number of bolt on fixed sights such as Magpul BUIS sights or your choice of optics. Pretty rough but you get the general idea. Kind of like a Beretta Storm with a standard stock for the CA market.

You can't go wrong with a HiPoint 9mm. Amazingly fun w/out breaking the bank.

Option 1) Get a Mech Tech and buy those drums! Base unit $360.

Option 2) Lone Wolf Glock Magazine AR $385 + complete 9mm upper

Colt makes a 9mm carbine in the AR platform. There are also companies that make lowers/uppers for 9mm .40s&w and .45 acp as well. If it were me i would prefer to go this route.

Because it's not a 9mm which is what I am looking for.

I haven't fired one, but J&G in Prescott has semi-auto Suomis. About half the price of an AR and they can use factory drum mags. If you don't want to drive up to Prescott, there's a good chance they will bring some to the SAR show next month.
Haha, I've stopped pointing it out at this point. I know this is a CA gun board, but it is honestly one of the most informative gun boards I frequent which is why I ask questions on here, otherwise I would have to deal with all the wise-*** comments over on ar15.com, and if it wasn't for my twice a year trips into occupied territory I would leave you all alone, but I need to keep up on the law changes to make sure the carry gun that gets locked away before I hit the border is compliant enough to keep my *** out of handcuffs.

I'm always looking for an excuse to get out of Phoenix for a weekend, so maybe I can convince the GF we need to go to Prescott for a weekend, and OH, while we are here, can I check out this awesome place real quick...promise, I will only be in there for a few minutes

So, at this point the KelTec is out. I wasn't too thrilled about the quality of them, and thanks to Hardwarejunkie I know that I could build a dedicated AR in 9mm that takes Glock mags.

I'm really down to the Just Right Carbine, the MechTech upper for a Glock or the Suomi if I want to be "budget friendly" about this, or the Lone Wolf lower route if I decide this is something to invest a lot of money in.

Gonna do a bit more research on those options, but I see myself probably going with the Suomi since this started off with me really just wanting a cheap way to shoot a rifle, and at $400 for a rifle from J&G it will probably be the cheapest, just gotta see how that rifle feels in my hands.

It's gonna feel heavy and cumbersome but that's my opinion. Best thing to do is find one locally where you are and check it out before you decide. Attractive price though for as much metal the thing is made of.
I thought I would add though, that it's another WW2 replica firearm so from that standpoint it's still neat, and again for a decent price.

Does it have to be 9mm? The thread title is pistol caliber =)

                          Takes Glock mags!

                          (but not really Beta mags)

Yet another vote for the High Point. Mines in .45ACP though.

As to Keltec quality, I bought an SU-16CA for my wife and have had no reason to regret it. Personally I think it is a better match to the 5.56 cartridge then an AR.

While we are on the topic, can you get Just Right carbines in CA? Are they "bullet button able"?
