I got a tool from Midway like the ones described above. But truthfully, I don't even bother anymore. I just use the take-down pin to push the detent and spring into the hole. Once the take-down pin is lined up with the hole, I just slide it through. It locks into place, and I am done. Less than 10 seconds, tops. It just takes a little practice, that is all.

The tool I showed you will work with the lower in your picture.

You insert the tool from the left side of the receiver.

Line up holes and drop the spring and detent into place.

Use a small punch to push the detent far enough into the receiver so that you can rotate the tool.

Once the tool is rotated, the detent can't go anywhere.

At this point you grab your pivot pin and use it to push the tool out of the receiver.

This. Just use the side of the takedown pin. Line it up. Push it through.

I use a razor blade or a utility knife. Put the whole lower in a clear plastic bag when you do it the first few times to catch any flying parts.

I never knew there was a tool for this... I think that is over complicating the process. As stated by others, you can simply use the pivot pin itself to compress the detent/spring then slide it in.

I've launched a couple in to space even using the clevis pin. If you local and need another detent let me know. I have a few.

Wow you guys are really complicating things with all those tools and gizmos. I built my very first AR and simply used a business card in one of those many parcels that came with my parts. A card is stiff enough to hold that detent in place, yet flexible enough to slip out after the pivot pin is in place. Much safer than a razor (I couldn't find one anyways).

                          agreed ^

i just used an old drivers license, it worked pretty well

one word of caution, make sure that detent is in place before pushing the pin in...the detent slipped while i was getting the pin in, and i ended up mangling the detent spring

Works like a charm and not trying to find the detent or spring in the carpet when it flies out.

I've done a LOT of lowers.

Quickest and easiest way for me is to line up the spring and detent pin, then use the pivot pin edge to press in the detent pin and slide into place.

It takes a little practice, but I can get it on the first try 9/10 times now.

If it's your first try, do it in a white room with no floor vents and places for a detent pin to hide
