    AR Lower Question

I am going to pick up my two new lowers tomorrow and am wondering if I need a gun lock for both of them or if I need a gun lock at all to pick them up? Thanks.

each FFL is different. Just plan on buying a lock there for each, so bring money.

I suggest you call the shop where you are picking them up...

I picked up lowers a few months ago and was told I needed locks.

I have used 3 different FFLs in my local area. All three required you to buy a gun lock from them (~$6 for a lock). One allowed you to bypass that if you signed an affidavit stating you have a gun safe at home.

Just give them the model number of your UL listed gun safe and sign the affidavit. No lock needed.

I get mixed messages on this one - even though I pointed out I had a safe 'they' said I'd need a lock. When I picked up my lower - no lock.

Seems some local ordinances also come into play (or so 'they' said) for example Livermore has a local ord regarding locks. I don't know if that is true but that is what the FFL said. When I picked up my rifle I had a locking case so GTG.

I pretty much always have a locking case for transport anyway...

Also not every FFL insists on the safe affidavit - some just take your word.

Of course, I look normalish (aka middle aged white male power elite clique) and almost always have one of my little kids in tow.

My experience is a JD lower I bought came with a lock, the two Franklin lowers I bought did not come with a lock and no issue taking them home like that.

Correct, Municipal Codes can come into play.

San Diego has a MC regarding trigger locks:

                        "33.4212. Provision of Trigger Locks.

                        (a) It is unlawful for any firearm dealer to sell, give, lend or transfer ownership of any firearm without also providing with the firearm a trigger locking or similar device approved by the Chief of Police. The trigger locking or similar device shall be designed to prevent the unintentional discharge of the firearm. The trigger locking or similar device shall be attached to the firearm prior to the completion of the sale, gift, lending or transfer transaction, and the firearm must leave the premises of the firearms dealer with the trigger locking or similar device attached. If a trigger locking or similar device cannot be attached because the firearm lacks a trigger guard, a lockable bag or box shall be used in lieu of a trigger locking or similar device. Nothing in this section shall prevent the firearms dealer from recovering the cost of the trigger locking or similar device by charging a price for the lock, either separately or as part of the price of the firearm."

                          Livermore MC RE:Trigger locks

Seems even a locking case is not good enough unless one is free to interpret "similar device" as a reasonable person. I would think any reasonable person would agree that an AR style lower would be rendered to prevent "unintentional discharge" with nothing more than positive thoughts or less.

I've never needed them for the lowers I've picked up from 2 different FFLs.

ca requires transferee to purchase ca approved lock, or provide a lock receipt within last 30 days, or sign a safe affidavit under per jury penalty when picking up the firearm.

Firearm Safety Devices What is the Firearm Safety Device (FSD) law? Are there any exceptions to the Firearm Safety Device (FSD) requirement? Does the Firearm Safety Device (FSD) requirement apply to a firearm that is returned from pawn or consignment? Can a firearms dealer refuse to submit a DROS for a Private Party Transfer if the firearm does not include a Firearm Safety Device (FSD)? If a customer needs to purchase a Firearm Safety Device (FSD), should it be purchased at the same time as the firearm or when the firearm is delivered?
