    Colt Competition Rifles

Does anybody have first hand experience with Colt's competition rifles? How's the build quality? I'm eyeing the CRP-18 which looks all kinds of awesome. I handled Stag's 3G and was pretty impressed. I would think Colt is even better.

Yes, My wife loves her CRP-18, build quality is excellent. The trigger and balance are great right out of the box, gas adjustment system has been flawless too. Accuracy is great, and recoil is non existent.

I've got an earlier and cheaper version, the CRE-18CA. Very impressive rifle. Not cheap, but it shoots a little under MOA (5 rounds/100 yards, reliably), honestly, with me at the controls, which means a real shooter can probably do a lot better. The rifle weighs about 7 1/2 pounds with no optics and it points and balances really well. The gun has been totally reliable. The brake seems to work fine, but it is a .223, so how can you tell?!?!

Mine doesn't have the adjustable gas block. I put a MOE fixed rifle stock and an ambidextrous safety on mine, but a backwards (right-handed) shooter wouldn't need to swap the safety. I never learned to love the two-stage triggers, so I put a Timney in mine, but that is personal preference. The new ones have upgraded hand guards and a few other things on there.

I've assembled similar rifles that I feel were equal to this one, but they were not cheaper by the time I was done. If the CR fits your needs, you will probably be well-served. Good luck!

Any good 3 gun AR has to have at least 2 important features, a 'magic trigger' and a free float handguard, you still have to get a good optic. So the Colt comes with a Geissele trigger, free float, and a comp. Ok, is it better than a JP? Is it worth $2,000 plus? Don't know, haven't seen anyone running them in 3 gun yet.

I believe they were originally out of Oregon then were relocating to Texas. They are licensed under Colt. for manufacturing their rifles. I think they are pricey but well worth it. I just dont like their logo. I would have preferred the original logo, but again that logo belongs to Colt.

If your wife can handle it then I'm sure I can as well LOL. How's the recoil compared to a mid-length AR?

Great honest opinion. I am no marksman, just a plinker so it's great to hear the rifle can do most of the work. How does the gun balance with the scope on it? I imagine the balance would still be excellent because most of the weight it's upfront.

Ian Harrison actually uses one in his 3Gun for beginner video. I am not looking to compete in 3Gun, just something different from my carbine sized AK and mid-length Christensen.

The balance and handling characteristics with a scope mounted are fine. I put a Leupold Mark I base on mine and use low rings. It balances right behind the pivot pin. I've put a Nikon Monarch 5-20x44 on it for load development and shooting off a bench, and a Weaver Classic Extreme 1.5-4.5x24 on it for competition. The gun is very slick and fast handling, and light enough to shoot multiple targets as well as I can. The brake on mine is not very heavy, so it doesn't have the muzzle-heavy feel of some competition guns I've handled, but it looks like they've tweaked it quite a bit since I bought mine last summer.

Mine has the old Oregon address, and a non-ventilated free float hand guard, with no studs, rails, or mounting options. I have been meaning to call them to see if I can retro fit one of the new guards on mine. Otherwise I will just drill this one for a couple of studs and be done with it.

The bolt and all the internal parts look just like the parts in a New Haven CR6724CA Colt I have, so I'm not surprised that it has functioned so well. They include a target shot with the gun so I assume they're tuning them all to sub-MOA before they ship them.

OP, seems like you and I are looking at the same AR's.

I have read good things about it and decided it is worth a try to get one. I just haven't found one as it is not very common. I saw a CRE-18 but figured for a few bucks more, it is better to wait for it.

I just jailed a JP-15 recently. I am not sure how it compares but it seems like it is the CRP-18's counterpart based on specs.

Let us know if you get one. I am really curious how it compares against your CA-15, too.

Sweet man. First hand information is always good. I'm thinking about the Aero Precision mount which is only 2.8oz and Leupold's Mark AR which is 9.8 oz. At 13oz combined that's lighter than most scopes alone. Let me know if they will retro fit rifles. When I get the CRP-18 I want to see if they will flute the rest of the barrel to take off more weight.

I think it's a matter of when I will get one, not if

I'm curious to see how it stacks up to the CA-15 as well. The CA-15 is supposedly a sub MOA rifle with a 16 inch barrel.

Turner's has a Wednesday only sale on a colt competition, $300 off for $899. Seems a very good deal to me.

CCRs are excellent rifles. I am very happy with my CRX-16.

Yep, I think for $899 + tax + fees, the CSR 1516 (pretty much the entry level Colt Competition Rifle) is a worthwhile try.

She weighs about 105 lbs, and it does not push her at all, compared to my mid length rifle. It's tuned very well, although not super light, especially with magnified optix.
