AR15...What Caliber for Those Long Shots?

I have an extra AR15 lower and wanted to build something other than another 5.56 rifle. Something with a little more.....reaching out to touch something. I was thinking of a 6.5 Grendel

I just don't know what calibers are available for my size lower.

Would value your thoughts and input.

    Thanks in advance.

5.56 from a 18"+ with 75gr is good for ~600 yards. If you're looking to stretch to 1000 then get a 24" Grendel

What is far? You could always buy a 338 Lapua Magnum or a 300 win mag upper.

Some smiths don't like the Grendel because of how little material is around the locking lugs due to the size of the case head.

6.8, the 6mm Hagar, and a few wildcats all do a pretty good job without being to crazy about magazines.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

You want to shoot far with a military style rifle, get the right tool for the right job; M1A, FN LAR, HK 91, AR10

The AR15 is NOT a rifle and the 5.56 NATO is NOT a rifle caliber. The AR 15 is a "carbine" shooting a carbine caliber...the 5.56 NATO. A lot of AR owners will disagree with this statement but they are in denial...nothing more.

You're not much help. He's specifically asking for an ar15 compatible cartridge.

The 6-6.5mm cartridges will outshoot an old 7.62 battle rifle any day of the week. People are even whoopin azz with 5.56 in service rifle competitions.

If anyone's in denial, it's you man.

Let me know when the military and LE sniper communities move to the 5.56 /6mm platform. Until then trying to make the 5.56 something it is not simply makes one look silly....

Tell that to all the national match winners of the Farr trophy who won it with AR15s. He's not asking for a military/LE sniper rifle, he's not even asking for input on the 5.56 round at long range. Your info is rather dubious, certainly immature, and not topical.
