1st time out with my Scar 17

Thought I'd post my first impressions.

As soon as I picked up the rifle I noticed it felt really light, especially for a .308. It felt well balanced and ergonomic. Moving the selector from fire to safe was not as easy as my AR but close. The stock trigger was not nearly as bad as I had read. Mine didn't feel gritty at all and honestly it didn't feel that heavy either. I had already bought a Geissele during my 10 day wait so I went ahead and installed it. It was a big improvement and I'm glad I did it. If I hadn't already purchased it when I tested the factory trigger I probably wouldn't have bought it.

I haven't decided on an optic yet and still need to save up a bit more for the price range I am looking at. In the mean time I put a Lucid HD7 red dot on it. I know, I know it's like putting go-cart tires on a race car but what can I say, it's temporary. I also replaced the A2 grip with a Magpul grip. I did have to dremmel the grip but left the tang untouched. It actually lined up ok.

I adjusted the red dot to co-witness with the iron sights, little did I know the Iron sights were off by a lot. I didn't have the sight tool with me so this time I just adjusted the red dot. Once dialed in I was shooting about 3" @ 100 yards. I was able to hit a 300 yard & 500 yard plate with about 30% accuracy. The rifle was doing it's part.

While I was thoroughly impressed with the rifle and it is the best rifle I own, I think it has an internet perception of something other worldly, an end all to other rifles. It's not. It is a versatile beast that I'm glad I own but it won't replace a light weight compact AR for CQB, for me anyways. The rounds and mags are heavy and with some optics it becomes fairly heavy. The recoil is more than an AR but nothing even resembling a .308. It felt very similar to a 7.62x39.

The gun was very comfortable for the shooter, but bystander beware. I was standing at the 5 o'clock position behind the shooter and the concussion produced was insane! You felt it in your skull and teeth! If someone had a loose filling it could be enough to knock it out. It grabs a lot of attention at the range.

Overall I love the gun and can't wait to see what I can do with a 6x or 8x optic.

      Pics aren't loading...

I've got some time behind a SCAR-H, and I didn't notice any grittiness with the trigger.

This particular rifle had several thousand rounds through it, so that may be why.

I've got some Eagle SCAR mag pouches in Ranger green if you are looking to buy some

Thanks for the writeup! Sounds like a gun you don't want to fire indoors

If you don't like the stock selector, I switched over to the magpul scar selector and like it a lot better.... Better clicks / feel when going between safe and fire. It's a cheap upgrade also...

Also I'm not sure you can cowitness a red dot with the scar irons... I think there was a discussion on the fn forums on which proper height mount will cowitness with the scar iron sights. I think they mentioned the HK LaRue micro red dot mount would work, but don't quote me on that...

I have but it has been several years. The AR10 I fired was setup as a long range gun. I believe it had a 24" heavy barrel with a weighted A2 stock so it was much heavier. That being said I remember feeling that the AR10 recoil was still noticeably heavier than a 5.56 or 7.62x39. The Scar recoil feels no more than a 7.62 x 39.

In my opinion if I wanted a dedicated bench rifle I would go AR10 like the one I described. If I wanted a versatile battle rifle, Scar 17, and if I wanted something for CQB I might lean towards a lightweight AR15. That might change once I put more rounds down range with the Scar. While the Scar is light for a .308, I can't picture running it in the last Tactical Carbine class I took.

That being said, if I had to pick just one gun to keep it would be the Scar hands down.

Save up for a Elcan 1.5x6. I love it on mine.

It's tough to beat for a .308 "do it all" platform. Great weapon system and design. I don't own one but have shot one plenty enough to know a quality battle rifle when I shoot one. Now if only I had the funds for one...

I have one and can definitely say that the recoil is noticeably lighter than any AR10-type rifle that I've shot. If you can afford the price tag, there's really no reason you shouldn't get it.

Once you get some good glass on it and do your part, it will be shooting 1moa at 100 yards, especially with the nice trigger upgrade.

I bought my 1st SCAR17 a couple years ago, and the trigger was pretty crappy (maybe I am just picky because I have great triggers on almost every gun I own). It almost felt like the crappy toilet-flush feel you get with an HK91 trigger.

                              Congrats on your new toy!
