    .22 target distance

How far out do you guys put your .22 targets? Is there an accepted standard distance? At what distance does marksmanship suffer with the .22?

Part of this depends on the velocity of the ammo you are using. Regular high velocity .22LR is supersonic at around 1280ft/sec at the muzzle but as soon as the velocity drops below 1129ft/sec it becomes subsonic and this change from supersonic to subsonic can cause a very small, but measurable effect on your accuracy.

.22 Shooters can overcome this effect by shooting hypervelocity or subsonic ammo.

All depends on what you're shooting, but in general I would say that 100yds is about the maximum effective distance for most .22lr rifles For instance:

      - with my 10/22 target rifle with a bull barrel and "sweet 22" 6-18x scope with BDC turrets I can shoot coke cans out to 150 yds+ with a high probability of first shot hits out to about 120 yds.

      - With my iron sighted Taurus 63, I really don't shoot past 50 yds

      - With my Ruger MKI pistol, I usually shoot targets between 10-25 feet, but sometimes go as far as 25yds for fun

In general, 100 yds is the max for accurate first shot hits with most .22 rifles. 100-150 yds is easily doable with the right rifle. Between 150-200 yds, I can walk shots in with the 10/22 shooting off of a bench or rest. Past 200 yds it's more like shooting artillery and is really just guess work. Also keep in mind that most .22lr projectiles are 30-40gr and so are affected pretty severely any wind past 100yds.

      Hope that helps,
      -Pete

i like to shoot at the steel plates out past 300 yards. you have to watch carefully for dirt hits on the misses and listen really close if you see no dirt kick up. most of the time hits are not known, you cant see em and barely hear em. on demand i can usually hit the 31 inch steel at 379 yards within 10 rounds. i once hit 6 in a row, but that was a fluke.

        i usually shoot 25-100 yards.

I shoot at 100 yards with good results, and when I get bored I go out to 2 and if really bored, 300.
