    I'd say

Muzzle Brake : Less barrel climb. People my disagree, but the "fast follow up shot" for me is not as noticeable.

Flash Hider : Reduced muzzle flash. Does not in my opinion reduce noise at all. Purpose is for shooting at night to not blow-out your vision.

A hybrid unit that provides some flash suppression and is also a muzzle brake…

          For a 5.56?

          Flash hider.

Unless you are putting a suppressor on it.

            Get a Flash Hider.

Since you said its for home deference at night the flash from you muscle can temporary blind you leaving your vulnerable, muscle climb and noise really is not your priority here, its being able to see your target and shoot again is the more important thing in Home Defence

Less muzzle climb lends to faster follow up shots, and a flash hider is probably not as loud as a muzzle brake.

                  Same noise level downrange.

For SHTF scenarios, I'd rather be on target sooner, than worry that the flash would not be noticed over the loud bang

With a muzzle brake I imagine the concussion bouncing off the close corridors and significant muzzle flash to be dangerous to the user. In that close of an environment, those faster follow up shots can still be done without needing a brake. Just my .2

I think if you research the types of powder and ammunition available you will find you can reduce the flash a lot more with ammunition choice than you can with a flash hider. So my choice is muzzle brake.

Long gun is not my choice for inside the home as a sie note.

Have fun shooting down zombies in doors with you muzzle brakes! Then again I guess you could deafen your opponent that way as well.

"Then there are sheepdogs. The sheepdogs are the bastions of safety. The sheepdog lives solely to protect the flock and confront the wolf. They live for the opportunity to be called to duty to protect the innocent. The sheepdog has fangs and the propensity for violence but hopes that he will not have to resort to it. However, he lives for that day when he will be able to use his warrior skills and mindset to keep the wolf from harming the sheep."

Muzzle break, because why would you be using a magazine locked rifle for self defense?
