Ordered some cosmoline and it came with a SKS

So a couple of weeks back there was a thread about Atlantic Firearms having a Chinese SKS for $299. The thread warned of the clean up but yikes.

I was told to soak the thing in diesel. Was looking to find out what others have done.

Had an un issued Alby like that. Took a LONG time to get it clean. I took all the wood, spread newspapers on the dash of my old wagon, and let everything soak in the sun on a hot day. wiped every couple of hours. The metal parts I soaked in a solvent tank filled with MEK, and then detail cleaned.

If you live with your woman, DO NOT use the oven for the stock. You will NEVER hear the end of it!!

I took mine apart, put the wood parts in a hefty bag and left it outside in the hot sun a couple days in a row, wiping the parts down every hour or two. The cosmo will seep out of the wood when it's heated. When I did mine it was in the middle of summer though. If your significant other is willing (or doesn't find out), use the oven like Paper Pimp said. Some people will say to use chemicals on it - DON'T! You may do permanent damage to the wood.

                  Thanks for the direction.
So with no one seconding the diesel, I'll go with the tear down and mineral spirits and or a jug of WD40. No chemicals for the wood, check. No oven. (It's new and I don't need the stress) Heat gun, OK.

Sounds like a good way to get to know this thing.

You shoulda been around in the late '80's/early '90's - cosmoline grew on TREES in those days!

wipe off any extreme excess cosmoline, clean out of vital areas like bore and firing pin channel so you don't have any malfunctions, then just shoot it until whatevers left comes bubbling out and wipe it away

Make sure the firing pin is clean and clear. The pin should be free floating.

The absolute BEST way to remove cosmoline from the metal is to boil a large pot of water and drop the bolt and small parts in it. Then take a large amount of boiling water and just slowly dump it on the barreled action. The Cosmo will slide right off from all the nooks and the parts will self dry from the heat. Just be sure to wear insulated gloves because the parts get HOT.

For the stock, wipe and place in black garage back as mentioned above.
