    question about the flow chart

I purchased a plain-Jane Chinese Norinco sks from my local GS. Everything is there on the gun including sling, but it's missing the spike bayonet. I then started looking into whether there would be a problem purchasing and installing a spike to make my SKS complete.

As I was looking at the Calguns AW flowchart and noticed that under Appendix A it lists "Made in China 56" and "Norinco 56" as being AW's. Aren't most Chinese SKS's considered to be type 56? If so, does that mean a Chinese SKS is an AW according to the flow chart?

    Thanks for your comments

Made in China Type 56 is an AK clone.

The SKS is Chinese SKS Type 56 Carbine

and the Chinese SKS's that I have seen don't have any markings refering to Type 56. I then point to Harrott that if it isn't marked, I can't be expected to know that it is considered a listed make/model.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I think you're both correct, thanks. I noticed that Appendix A refers to the "Roberti-Roos" AW list. When I looked up the AW ID guide of 2001 I found that they show a picture of an AK when they refer to a type 56. When they show a picture of a banned SKS, it is shown with an AK mag and mentions that SKS's with this configuration are what's banned.

It also notes in "Generic Characteristics" for AW's that "bayonets and bayonet lugs are not assault weapon characteristics under California law."

I printed all of this information out and will be keeping copies of it in my portable rifle case when I'm away from home with it.

        Thanks again

the naming convention is important, and it has to be exact.

Colt Law Enforcement LE6920's are banned by name, however, Colt M4 LE6920s are legal.

Likewise, Made in China Type 56 is not the same as Made in China Type 56 Carbine

What's most annoying is why both AK's and SKS's have this vague reference to the number "56". Where does the number "56" come from?

Same place "47" comes from. AKs went into production in (roughly) 1947; China started manufacturing clones in 1956.

ETA: see also AK-74 ... and, while we're at it, M1903, M1911, etc.
