    Optics question?

    Hey guys,

I never really got into optics before this but I recently bought a primary arms 30mm reddot and it seems to work great but I also ordered a 6x magnifier to go with it. I cant really focus or see anything when I have the stock extended... when the stock is collapsed I can see a decent picture. Is that how they re meant to be used? This is on a sig 716 for reference... when used with a reddot on an AR15 is this how they are meant to be used? With the stock collapsed and upclose? Any opinions or recommendations?

    Thanks

RDS are supposed to be unlimited eye relief....farther away is best to give you the most field of vision...

Not sure whats going on here.

      Got both eyes open right?

It's probably the magnifier that is giving him issues with eye relief.

Yes I think its the magnifier... the reddot works well. On further reading I think I may need a magnifier with greater eye relief?

The higher the magnification, the shorter the eye relief. Take a look at the Vortex VMX3T or PA 3X LER models.

I'm not really a fan of magnified red dots.

That rifle deserves a variable power optic, I'd put an SWFA 3-9x42 or something similar on that thing.

Yea I think it might be an eye relief problem... in what setup would the 6x magnifier work best? I really have to get pretty close to it... my face is right next to the charging handle to really get any kind of a sight picture..

that means you're doing it right. nose to charging handle is standard shooting position for AR-pattern rifles. the idea is that you want to be NTCH when using the irons, so maintain a consistent position when using other sights as well.

if the ergonomics really suck for you, go for the longer eye relief version, but don't think you're doing something wrong by holding that position.

                  .

I wouldnt use a 6x magnifier since as you discovered, eye relief is too short. For a 716, a scope is the better option.

I think I ll try to contact primary arms and see if I could trade the 6x for the 3x with long eye relief

Is it possible to have a regular scope with a flip to side mount?

I'm sure it's possible, but not practical. You would be better off hard mounting the scope and having a 45* RDS or 45* irons.
The actual value of above $.02 is less than $.01 after taxes.

I'm still not sure what you're looking to do, man. You want to put a flip to side magnifier behind a scope? Not a good idea.
For that round (7.62x51), you really want a good scope with MILs or BDC, not a red dot + magnifier setup.
