    Sig556 Gas Tube Roughly Hewn

Since someone brought up the Sig 556 in another thread, I pulled mine out and gave it a thorough cleaning. I hadn't cleaned it after my last range trip.

I noticed that the gas tube has a seriously rough finish. Since the piston and spring ride inside this tube, it no doubt causes more wear to these parts than necessary.

    Here's a look at it:

Mine looks similar,as long as it works (after several thousand rds) I am
    not concerned. Pete

Yeah, maybe. I went ahead and honed it out and now the action is way smoother and quieter. It'll clean up much faster and easier now, too. Would have been nice if they came that way.

from what I understand, there's a notable difference between Swiss made SIGs and US made SIGs. I had one (US) and sold it

I heard the same. The Swiss ones must be a work of art because the 556 i have is pretty sweet. Apparently, the Swiss gas tubes are rough just like mine, tho.

Wet-or-Dry 220 to 1000 wrapped around a patch on a bronze brush. Chucked up in a drill.

I didn't take it all the way down. Just knocked the tops off the ridges until it was smooth to the touch.
