    Good .223/5.56 deer hunting round

Hi all in a few weeks I will be going hunting here in Northern California. I am using my AR15 with a PSA upper 16inch barrel 1/9 twist. I need advice on which round would be most effective for deer. I know most people would advise I use a larger caliber but I can not purchase a new rifle at the moment so I have to make due with what I have. I have heard to use a heavier grain ammunition but I am concerned that I will have accuracy issue due to the 1/9 twist. FMJ is not allowed so ammo must be soft point or HP or frang ammo. Any and all advice is welcomed. Thanks for looking.

With your twist I would recommend a 55 grain Barnes tsx.they kill great.the 60 might work too with your twist.the copper bullets are more picky on twist.mine likes the 70 grain tsx but its a 1-7 twist.

excellent thread: I've also pondered the same thing. Even though mines a 1n7. I'm interested in seeing where this thread goes. The plethora of info this forum holds. Bring a shovel cuz you'll need to dig through all the bullsh*t.
      Thanks for 411 chad

70 gr. Barnes bullet in a 1/7 twist will do just fine

I run the risk of getting flamed, but I have always been told that once you are using less than a 100 grains, you are increasing the risk of wounding rather than killing the animal. I know some of you are confident in your marksmanship, but I do believe that you are handicapping yourself.

I am certainly not here to judge, but I wouldn't use anything smaller than a .243. I guess I am overly cautious by nature.

Something along this line should work...

Silver State Armory Ammunition 5.56x45mm NATO 70 Grain Barnes Triple-Shock X Bullet Hollow Point

            GR

(I think, therefore I am armed.)

Most every state forbids hunting larger game with a .22, yes, even a .223 or a 22-250, or a 220 swift.

                  Check yer laws.

I will have to double check but I believe .24 Ca (.243ect)l is the smallest that is legal in CA. Double check before you get dead set on taking your AR. I would want to get a ticket and lose my rifle. Plus that don't even touch on the un ethical side of it...

+1 For hunting any larger animals with a .223 the Barnes TSX or its copies are the way to go.

While I have "a few" .223/5.56 rifles, they would be among my very last choices for deer rifles. But, if you must use it, Barnes TXS bullets would be a good choice. However, why don't you do the ethical thing and try to borrow a more suitable firearm for taking large game?

Are you sure it's 1/9? I thought PSA uses FN barrels, check again it may be 1/7?

Is using a .223 considered less ethical than bow hunting? Most of the deer in CA are pretty light and I don't a .223 with the right bullet would have a problem taking one down as long as the distance is less than 200 yards.
