Folks, will the steel ammo cause any adverse effects in this rifle? Please point me in any direction you can. I know that in .556 it's neglible and would assume the same for the .762 but would like to play it in the cautious side. Please fill me in on any experience/knowledge.

Steel ammo in a 716

You can run it through the 716. However, be aware that people who have used them have indicated they had problems. Some have not had problems with them. Also it does increase the wear and tear factor but it would take a ton of rounds for it to really have an effect. Personally I stick with brass ammo to minimize the wear and tear factor and increase reliability just in case but it really doesn't hurt to try and run a box or two through it to test it out in your specific 716.

Not so fast...
Steel ammo is fine to run out of any gun, unless the chamber in question is too tight to begin with... which can lead to the steal casing being stuck once fired. When this occurs, no damage is incurred. Tap out the case and done. The tight chamber can be honed by a competent professional or home/hobby gunsmith. It doesn't take much honing to loosen the chamber just enough.
As for accelerated wear and tear... Steel, being harder than brass, can and will erode aluminum receivers (which is also softer). This wear occurs at the deflector and at the interior rim of the ejection port opening. With that said, you will not see significant wear unless you run thousands and thousands of rounds through the rifle.
It's a tool. Even a hammer experiences wear. Did you spend "$4k" to have an object to stroke and fondle once in a while? Or, did you buy a firearm?
The internet is full of myths and half truths that get blown way out of proportion.
Question and consider what you read before passing it on as absolute truth.Last edited by fmunk; 09-20-2013, 11:50 AM.Comment

The money you save will be enough to replace the parts that were going to wear out anyway. Who cares? It's like worrying about taking your off road tires in the dirt cause they wear faster and driving on the street instead. Same results, just slightly prolonged.Comment

For clarification what do we mean by steel?
case?
jacket?
Both?
In short it can be a little harder on components, but not really a big deal.
Would I fire steel jacketed bullets through a super precision stainless steel barrel? Probably not, but mostly because it defeats the purpose of having that kind of barrel.
