    Got my opap today

Picked her up today. I am very happy with the quality and I need to refinish the stock. I'm kinda concerned since the stock looks like it layed around a mechanics shop for a while. What do you guys recommend I use to preclean the wood prior to sanding with fine paper prior to stain? I was thinking acetone but maybe some guys with more wood experience can help .

    Thanks
    Joe

      Acetone works just fine.
      Naptha, denatured alcohol etc etc

        Thank you very much.

I am just going to minwax it and poly coat it after. I have read about guys lightly sanding between clear coats.....is this really necessary?

        Thank you for the help

If you sand between coats it will look really nice when you're done. If you don't, it'll look like your kids 6th grade woodshop project

Tung oil with bronze wool, or tru-oil if you want a bit more of a "hard coat" while still being an rubbed oil finish.

For sure.....I just sanded the sh*t out all 3 pieces. I started with 150 and ended with 220 and after a while and some acetone to boot I finished.

Maybe I am not familiar with surplus AK wood but let me tell you my wood was F'd up, pitted and dirty. I don't get it, is this the way all AK's come or just this particular model?

The pics are a bit deceiving but the wood is really smooth and should stain nicely. I was able to really concentrate on the front guards since they were really sloppy, full of splinters and dirty.

I went with minwax prestain, minwax golden pecan and minwax wipe on poly....should look nice. I'll get some pics once it is done.

Thats to bad about the crest. I actually got lucky and got a crest on mine. I asked atlantic firearms if they could send me one with a crest and they actually came through.
