      I own 2 MIAs, a PTR91, VEPR308, Saiga308, 2 AR-10s, and a SCAR17.

IMO, the SCAR17 is leaps and bounds better than the others. I plan on keeping one M1A that I invested a large sum of money into to accurize and the SCAR17. I will be giving the rest to my kids. I like the PTR91 the least.

I have done high-round count classes in the desert with my M1A and LMT308. They did not perform as well as the SCAR does, especially the LMT after a 4-day class in the desert.

I beat the snot out of my SCAR17. I have dropped it several times, I crawl around in the dirt with it, I spray paint it to match the training environment, and rarely ever clean it except when I am ready to repaint it. I have over 1500 rounds through it right now without cleaning, including lots of rounds last weekend at a 3-day sniper class where it grouped well out to 850 yards with a Nightforce 2.5-10. IMO, it is the perfect balance between CQB and effective long range capability. Light enough to carry all day, unlimited optic and gear mounting possibilities, runs very clean and reliable, totally ergonomic and adjustable, whole rifle can be repaired with one hex wrench, very little recoil, and MOA accuracy.

The only drawback to the SCAR is the factory trigger, which is just as crappy as an HK trigger. I immediately switched to the Geissele trigger and could not be happier (except for the price).

Parts and mags are also becoming readily available. I just bought a LPK to build a second "featureless" lower to use my 308 Pmags. I also plan on getting another barrel, so I can swap barrels for general use and long range.

People on the interwebs will get "all dramatic" about the price. But if you want the best 308 battle rifle, or the best of anything, it will cost money. If you have the money to buy the SCAR and train with it, why limit yourself?

^^^ Thanks for the review. Probably one of the most useful review since you have experience on multiple platform AND have used those platforms on courses with high round count.

        SCAR FTW!!!

I used to subscribe to the speciality/piston operated guns. I since have sold all of mine because there isn't a great parts commonality with standard AR. Since you said this is your GTG, if SHTF and something breaks....what then?

              SHTF fallacy

I've been thinking about this for awhile. SHTF and parts commonality is a good concern, but honestly it's purely theoretical.

SHTF is, what, realistically natural catastrophe like earthquake or fire, right? That means probably a week to month of pure chaos, with the eventual restoration of civil services and utilities. Do you really think ANY of the guns we buy would fail in that amount of time?

Now, total post-apocalyptic event, like Zombies or Aliens, where the national infrastructure goes to *****, then yes, maybe you'd have more of an argument. The SCAR (and other major piston guns) have been tested to much more stringent (read: battlefield) conditions than what we'd likely see even in these unlikely events.

So sure, being able to exchange parts between guns or scavenge parts from the dead bodies of your victims is great. But having a rifle that is less likely to need additional parts/maintenance is pretty cool too. And I'm sure anyone who's as paranoid as the majority of people on here are, would likely have a few necessaty spare parts for their go to guns.

Great overview! I really appreciate it and makes me feel good about my decision to get the Scar.

I got a great deal on one, so I don't care. Mostly all people that have scars say it's their go to gun. I never heard any complaints.

If you have an AR platform already, go with the SCAR17.
