    M1A: Socom 16 or Standard?

Which would you prefer and why?

    I already have a few 5.56/7.62 CQB-length rifles.

with the bans coming, my father is likely to gift me one of his rifles (was going to give me later, but seeing as he won't be able to later)

I'm leaning towards the standard with the wood stock.

What glockman said. Scout is the jack of all trades, but otherwise, go Standard.

              Standard

Sturdy, reliable rifle with some heft to it. Plenty accurate for a service rifle.

...and they are dead sexy with wood stocks.

Find a deal on a loaded or national match model. They come up on this and other online message boards pretty regularly. Only bad part is people around here are starting to go bonkers so prices are a bit higher than they should be.

                  Alright I voted 'Standard'.

Standard. The Socom is really heavy, overly loud and what are you really going to do with all of those rails.

The Socom 16 doesn't have "all those rails" imho. Perhaps you're thinking of the Socom II ?

Additionally the Socom 16 is 1 lb lighter than a Loaded.

I have a number of standard length barrel M1a's and other 7.62 battle rifles. I like the Socom 16 a lot for the compactness. If I could only have one I agree the Scout is the jack of all trades, but if you already have a Loaded or similar go with the short Socom 16.
