    FN PS90

I like to know I have an FN PS90 and is looking to buy some ammo. My question is SS198 Legal to own in CA? it is Hollow point bullet. Is Ss198 Armor piercing around? Thank you

The red box stuff is legal to own but FN doesn't sell it civilian .. So you have to buy it second hand, which is more expensive.. The hollow points are as legal as any othe hollow point

Theyre gtg. ATF doesn't define the ss198 as AP ammo so you'd be fine owning/shooting it in a ps90 or even a five-sevn pistol.

SS190 is also out there (costly as hell) and is good to shoot through a ps90. I would NOT own it if you have a five-seven, as it's classified as AP by the ATF and that's a no no in cali if you have the pistol to shoot it.

I believe even SS190 is *techinically* not true AP ammo.

The composition is the SAME as SS109/62gr .223 penetrator bullets. The difference is, SS190 has an aluminum alloy core behind the penetrator vs. lead on the SS109.
There is an exemption in the AP ammo laws regarding bullets where the construction is mostly not steel, which is the case for 190.

It's all academic anyways. FN will absolutely not sell SS190 to civilians, and if you can find some gray market ammo it's TEN DOLLARS A SHOT (maybe more now).

        Thanks but no thanks.

Of course the cheaper option is to "roll your own"

5.7x28 is one of the most difficult cartridges to reload due to the high pressure and small case capacity (a 0.1gr variation in powder charge, using small rifle primers, or using heavier .223 bullets could lead to dangerous overpressure). If you've ever shot a P90 or handled the ammunition then you should know how tiny the cartridges are. You'd have to have baby hands to cycle them through a press without fumbling. Not to mention that you can't even tumble the brass since it will ruin the factory coating that FN applies for reliable chambering and extraction.

I handload for all my firearms, but if I owned a PS90 or five-seven it wouldn't even be worth all the headaches for it.

I'm curious as to how those ss190 bullets would perform loaded in 5.56

Ammo is plentiful at www.gunbroker.com If you're patient, you can average about $30 per box for the 197. There are always people selling it at $50 per box and they're out of their minds. The more rare 190, 198, 195 etc. can be bought but at a high price. I'm able to find 197 all day at a few local stores for $30 per box

My uncle loads 5.7 over in NC.

He does it one round at a time on a single stage press, but has loaded hundreds if not thousands by now.

The trick is to keep your loads on the lower side, and use them for practice. Save the good stuff for defense.

If you load conservatively, +0.1-0.2gr won't do much.
