    M1a Scout Zeroing Questions

I will be picking up my new baby this weekend and I had a few questions that I couldn't find any answers to searching the forum.

I wanted to know what the best range to zero my rifle would be? I'll be taking it to Angeles to get it dialed in.

Most ballistics tables assume a 20" or 22" barrel for M80 ammo. I also thought I read somewhere that there was a good zero for 7.62NATO that allowed for a dual Zero (something like Zero at 50m and 200m, but i don't remember).

    Any help would be appreciated.

Also, if you have any pointers on a good rest for this process, when I got my .22 sighted in I'm pretty sure I did a terrible job (i've got tremors) but it was close enough for government work so it didn't bother me. I'd like to do it properly with the M1a.

    TIA

Dear Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms,
    Thanks for the idea!

I don't have an M1a, but just a quick pointer is that almost any zero, except one specific one that depends on your rifle and ammo combination, will be a "dual" zero. When it leaves the barrel, it will cross up over the line of aim from your sights, and then will fall back down to your line of aim. Where they cross the second time is what your zero is. For your 308, it may very well be close to a 50/200 zero, if you are shooting through some type of glass. But if you are shooting off the iron sights, because of the lower line of sight, you will have a very different first zero if you sight the rifle in for the same 200 shot.
