30th birthday time for some new toys, help pick. 9/24 update THEY'RE HERE!!!

    Edit:update and pic post#47

    Hello Calguns

So my 30th bday is later this week and im getting myself a new toy or two
My problem is there are a bajillion options and it doesnt help that im not really sure what exactly I want to do with it. Ideally Im thinking semi-auto but open to the option of a bolt gun. C&R would be cool but isnt a requirement. Im looking for something that is cheap enough to go plinking with but im also interested in getting into hunting varmint to medium size game(Hog). Im working with about $1000+/-, so if what im really looking for ends up being two guns thats what im working with to start.

Im interested in a Garand or SKS not so much for the history of them but for the fact that they can be had C&R.

I like the reliability of the AK but im not sure if its what I really want and I need to look into hunting with it.

At the risk of getting that EBR disease I could go Multi-cal AR lower and then get different uppers for plinking and hunting.

Ive wanted a pistol and carbine set that share mags so maybe a JRC to go with my G35. I dont know about hunting with it but if not I can get a bolt gun for that later.

This will be my first centerfire rifle and this is all uncharted waters so any info or suggestions will be welcome

Build an AR. But take your time and build something sweet.

If not then buy ammo, lots of ammo...
"Then there are sheepdogs. The sheepdogs are the bastions of safety. The sheepdog lives solely to protect the flock and confront the wolf. They live for the opportunity to be called to duty to protect the innocent. The sheepdog has fangs and the propensity for violence but hopes that he will not have to resort to it. However, he lives for that day when he will be able to use his warrior skills and mindset to keep the wolf from harming the sheep."

There is a thread around here somewhere for $65 lowers. I'd pick up a half dozen more than you think you'll ever need. At that price, you can't go wrong.

Of course, you could always just get an old left handed compound bow. I happen to know where one is.

Is any make ok or do I need to avoid certain manufactures?

For instant gratification, pick up 500 rounds of 308.

Just some info, if you are referring to a lower that is marked "multi cal." that doesn't mean anything. You can run any legal (length) upper you want on your regular 5.56 marked or unmarked for that matter, lower. There are many caliber options you can run with a 5.56 lower. Even 50 cal bolt uppers, muzzle loaders, I've even seen a cross bow upper.

So long as the upper is designed to work with a spec 5.56 lower, you're gtg. Just make sure you understand California's myriad of laws re mag locks, mag capacities, oal, featureless etc.

                      Good luck!

I'd say an 80% and a bolt gun.

If you don't have an AR yet, build one up first. They're just too damned modular, and there's going to be a variant out there that fits your needs. Build it so you learn how it works. Plus 5.56 is a standard for us, so there'll always be some out there, if that's the flavor you go with (and that's what I'd recommend).

Once you have an AR, then go C&R or .30 cal stuff.
                            Yeah.

                            I'm pissed.

WTB: FN FS2000..don't care anymore about this one either.

What don't you have? And what do you want to do with this toy?

I just ordered a PTR from Atlantic Arms. It fills a niche I didn't have anything for yet. I'm justifying it as a gun for hog hunting...

Though, you may be onto something with the varmint hunting. I've never seen what a .308 would do to a groundhog.
